Heading into the weekend, there’s probably a handful of shows on your watch list you want to start binging. But of course, nothing is as exciting as the big premiere this Sunday night, when the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon finally begins. Diehard fans of the books by George R.R. Martin and casual fans of the original show alike will be in for a treat when watching the first episode. We’ll get to meet a new group of characters, storylines, and dragons as this new story unfolds.

If you’re planning your watch party for House of the Dragon but aren’t sure if you can stream the premiere without HBO or HBO Max, we’re here to provide all the answers you need!

Can you watch House of the Dragon without HBO or HBO Max?

There are actually a few ways to watch new episodes of House of the Dragon live without subscribing to HBO or HBO Max. For viewers in the United States, you can access the Game of Thrones prequel with Hulu if you use their HBO Max add-on for an extra fee. If you already subscribe to Hulu, this might be a good deal. But if you don’t have Hulu, you might want to consider just subscribing to HBO Max, with plans starting at $9.99 a month.

YouTube TV also offers an HBO Max add-on if you’re interested in signing up for that platform. At the time of this writing, you can get YouTube TV for $54.99 a month for your first three months, and after that it’ll cost you $64.99 every month. This is kind of steep, but YouTube TV offers over 85 channels. DIRECTV is another service that offers HBO Max as part of their premium TV package.

But if you can’t access HBO Max because you’re located somewhere where the platform isn’t available, then you might have to get creative. For those in the UK, the good news is that House of the Dragon will stream on Sky Atlantic services just like Game of Thrones did. The series is also expected to stream in Australia on the platforms Foxtel and Binge.

But for those who cannot access the aforementioned streaming services, it’s probably best to start looking into using a VPN.

When you use a VPN, you’re able to disguise your IP address on your internet, so you can access different platforms despite your location. If this interests you, check out this handy list from Forbes of the best VPNs out there.

The big night is coming up so soon! Be sure not to miss the premiere of House of the Dragon this Sunday, August 21 at 9:00 p.m. EST.
