Title of Jodie Whittaker’s final Doctor Who episode revealed
By Michael East
The end of any Doctor’s time on Doctor Who is always a huge affair. It marks the transition from one era of the show to another, usually with sadness but massive anticipation for what comes next. The end of the Jodie Whittaker era is even bigger, and now Doctor Who Magazine has revealed the title for her final episode.
Airing in October, Whittaker’s last bow as the Doctor will be entitled “The Power of the Doctor.” It’s a quintessential Doctor Who title, bringing back memories of Matt Smith’s final trilogy: “The Name of the Doctor,” “The Day of the Doctor,” and “The Time of the Doctor.”
For long-time fans, it’s also evocative of Patrick Troughton’s debut story, “The Power of the Daleks.” And while there don’t seem to be any Daleks featured, we do know the episode will see the return of Sacha Dhawan as the Master, in addition to some Cybermen.
“The Power of the Doctor” will be Jodie Whittaker’s final Doctor Who episode
“The Power of the Doctor” will be a feature-length special the BBC is mounting to mark the network’s 100th anniversary. Alongside the Master and Cybermen, the episode will see the return of 1980s-era companions Tegan Jovanka (Janet Fielding) and Ace (Sophie Aldred), which will turn “The Power of the Doctor” into something of a celebration of the show’s history.
The episode will end what has been one of the most controversial eras in the show’s 60-year history, with showrunner Chris Chibnall coming under heavy fire from fans for the quality of recent scripts and significant changes to the show’s lore. Chibnall will leave the show alongside Whittaker, with a new production staff coming in led by former showrunner Russell T. Davies.
Davies, who many consider the best showrunner Doctor Who has had since its 2005 relaunch, has cast Ncuti Gatwa as the next Doctor. David Tennant will also be returning to reprise his role as the Tenth Doctor at some point. Just how this will work hasn’t yet been confirmed.
With “The Power of the Doctor,” Chris Chibnall seems to want to go out on a high note, bringing back old favorites to give Whittaker’s Doctor a send-off worthy of her status as the first female Time Lord. We’ll have to wait until October to see if he succeeds.
“The Power of The Doctor” will air in October. The show will then take a break for over a year before returning in November 2023 with Russell T. Davies at the helm and Ncuti Gatwa as the Fourteenth Doctor.
