Real-world King’s Landing to host first “Cáceres: City of Dragons” event

We’re one week out from the end of the first season of House of the Dragon, and we’re already anticipating the next. It’s been confirmed that filming on season 2 will begin in spring 2023 in the Spanish town of Cáceres, aka the real-life King’s Landing. Both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon filmed lots of King’s Landing scenes in this city.

To celebrate House of the Dragon, Cáceres will host Cáceres City of Dragons, Europe’s biggest event related to the world of Game of Thrones. The weekend leading up to the season finale, October 21-23, fans will have the chance to immerse themselves in the Song of Ice and Fire universe and attend medieval jousts, concerts (Craic Addicts and the Flea Bottom Band), and sword exhibitions taking place in the streets of King’s Landing. There’s a packed program of activities including tours of the locations where both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon were filmed, escape rooms, sword fighting courses, parades, cosplay contests, themed dinners and parties. Most of the activities are completely free and open to the general public.

A set of panels of experts on the world of Game of Thrones will give fans the chance to meet many content creators from various corners of Europe. The guest of honor will be George R.R. Martin’s co-author Elio Garcia Jr., who cowrote The World of Ice and Fire and the upcoming The Rise of the Dragon (out October 25) and cofounded Westeros.org. Alongside him, various popular YouTubers and media personalities will take the stage for panels in various languages, including English, Spanish, Italian, and French.

Visit Cáceres City of Dragons on October 21-23

I will have the honor of speaking at a panel with Elio Garcia Jr; Javi Marcos, a YouTuber, founder of Los Siete Reinos and organizer of Cáceres: City of Dragons; British Hugo Award-nominated writer Adam Whitehead; German writer and historian Stefan Sasse, and President of La Garde de la Nuit Patricia Auneau. In another panel I’ll speak alongside some of the giants of the Italian ASOIAF community: hosts of La Cittadella Egg (Damiano Vandi) and Saya (Valentina Bignamini); President and Founder of Martin International Studies Network Matteo Barbagallo; and Beatrice Sironi and Chiara Mendola from Il Podcast del Ghiaccio e del Fuoco. Other panels will include Christopher Gernier (La Garde de Nuit), Dani Abades (Maglor), Jag Durán, Maglor, Frikidoctor, Evil Smile, La Canción Continúa and Abuela de Dragones.

The weekend will kick off with a hundred Targaryen flags being hoisted on the town hall in the presence of administrative officials. The red-on-black three-headed dragon will stand tall and watch over Cáceres. What a way to feel the fire and blood rising, and to welcome back the House of the Dragon cast when they reprise filming for the show in a few short months.

City of Dragons is organized by the town of Cáceres in collaboration with Los Siete Reinos. The mayor of Cáceres, Luis Salaya, announced the event together with Councilor for Tourism Jorge Villar, Deputy for Tourism Patricia Valle, director of Extremadura Audiovisual Natalia Rodrigo, and the series specialist Javier Marcos on September 27.

Cáceres is ready to welcome thousands of fans to this celebration of House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. If you can’t make it next week, you can always plan a vacation for the future! As the show’s cast will attest, Spain is lovely pretty much every time of the year.
