What’s that blue stone in Aemond’s eye in the House of the Dragon season 1 finale?

House of the Dragon season 1 has officially come to a close, with the finale premiering tonight on HBO. I’m sure many jaws dropped at the events in Episode 10, “The Black Queen,” and I’m personally not over how fantastic the performances were. Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) returned this week after their noticeable absence in Episode 9, and there were more dragons! To me, that’s as much as I could ask for.

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for House of the Dragon Episode 10!

Of course, with the way the episode ended, everyone’s wondering what Rhaenyra will do next. Her sweet son Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) is sadly dead, and I don’t think she’ll be able to remain peaceful after that. Plus, people are very curious about when House of the Dragon season 2 might premiere. While we don’t have a confirmed release date for the next season, we can answer some of the questions about tonight’s finale. If you’re confused about one moment involving Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), we’re here to explain.

Viewers will remember that King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and Alicent Hightower’s (Olivia Cooke) son Aemond lost his eye back in Episode 7 during a fight with Rhaenyra’s sons and Daemon’s daughters. Lucerys sliced his eye out with a knife, and now in the season 1 finale, years later, Aemond wants revenge. When Lucerys shows up at Storm’s End with a message from Rhaenyra for Borros Baratheon (Roger Evans), he’s surprised to see that Aemond is already there.

What’s under Aemond Targaryen’s eye patch?

It doesn’t take long for Aemond to start challenging Lucerys, saying he owes him an eye as debt. At one point, he takes off his eye patch to reveal some sort of blue stone in his eye socket. Though it’s not said in the episode, we know from George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood that the stone is a blue sapphire.

House of the Dragon changes Aemond x Lucerys scene

The scene at Storm’s End is pretty short, and escalates quickly. Lucerys mounts Arrax and starts flying back home in a pretty bad storm, only to be confronted by Aemond on a much larger dragon, Vhagar, in the sky. Vhagar chomps on Lucerys and kills him, though in the show, it’s not Aemond’s intention to actually commit murder. In Fire & Blood, Aemond purposefully kills Lucerys, which is a catalyst for the Dance of the Dragons to begin.

House of the Dragon Episode 10 ends with Daemon delivering the news to Rhaenyra, who looks heartbroken, shocked, and above all, furious. I wish there were more episodes in season 1!

We’ll probably have to wait until 2024 for House of the Dragon season 2 to premiere, sadly. In the meantime, consider reading Fire & Blood if you haven’t already. You can find George R.R. Martin’s best-selling book on Amazon right here. You can also rewatch all 10 episodes of the first season right now on HBO Max.
