When will House of the Dragon season 2 come out?

House of the Dragon Episode 10
House of the Dragon Episode 10

The first season of House of the Dragon is in the bag! The first 10 episodes aired on HBO (and streamed on HBO Max) starting in late August and wrapping up in late October. The show was a success right out of the gate, and the higher-ups quickly greenlit a second season. But when will we see it?

Well, probably not for a while. The show is expected to film its second season in around the Spanish city of Cáceres from March to June of next year, and that’s just one of the locations it’ll be visiting. Given the heavy special effects work on this show, it’ll take a lot of time for the crew to touch up the footage to get it ready for air. And we should remember that season 2 will involve more dragons than season 1 did. Now that war has started in earnest, those things will be out there in the air and clawing at each other.

All this is to say that we wouldn’t expect to see House of the Dragon season 2 before 2024.

Is House of the Dragon season 1 over?

That said, HBO hasn’t announced an official release date, and it’s possible they could surprise us…but I doubt it.

Year-long gaps (or longer) have become de rigueur in the age of complicated, SFX-heavy fantasy and sci-fi dramas. Stranger ThingsThe Wheel of TimeThe WitcherThe Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power…all of them take at least a year off between seasons because that’s how long it takes to make another one. House of the Dragon is in this camp.

It’s true that the first six seasons of Game of Thrones came out at a rate of one per year, but that was before the production went all in on the special effects; the final two seasons of the show took longer to produce, and that’s the level where House of the Dragon is starting. It’s too bad we have to wait so long, but quality does take time.
