Shadow and Bone season 2 gets March release date and new images!
By Daniel Roman
Shadow and Bone was one of Netflix’s biggest new fantasy releases in 2021, but since then it’s been a long, relatively quiet road to season 2. Based on author Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels, Shadow and Bone follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a special kind of magic user called a Sun Summoner who is touted as a savior for her war-ravaged people. It also follows a group of misfit thieves known as the Crows, who feature in Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology. Season 1 ended with Alina and her beau Mal (Archie Renaux) setting sail for distant lands while the Crows headed back to the city of Ketterdam to regroup. What adventures await in season 2?
Shadow and Bone season 2 release date announced!
We may not have all the answers to that question right this second (although Bardugo’s books are out there if you’re so inclined), but we do at least know when we’ll find out. The official Shadow and Bone Twitter account has confirmed that season 2 of the series will hit Netflix on March 16, 2023. Prepare to return to Ravka!
Although the show will be going other places, as well. The sequel book to Shadow and Bone, Sea and Storm, features quite a lot of seafaring action. We’ll be getting much better acquainted with the further reaches of this world.
Netflix released a slew of new images to accompany the announcement. First up, we’ve got a few shots of Alina and Mal on ships:
We’ve also got the return of Ben Barnes as the Darkling/General Kirigan:
When last we saw Kirigan, he had been left for dead in the Shadow Fold, a miles-long swathe of land consumed by darkness and swarming with monsters. The final scene of season 1 revealed that Kirigan had survived, but he looks worse for wear.

Next we catch up with the Crows:
From left to right, we’ve got Nina Zenik (Danielle Galligan), Kaz Brekker (Freddy Carter), Inej Ghafa (Amita Suman), Jesper Fahey (Kit Young), and newcomer Wylan, played by Jack Wolfe. Season 1 of Shadow and Bone was a sort of prequel story for the Crows, showing how their group came together before the events of the first book they feature in: Six of Crows. It’s believed that season 2 will get into the events of the book proper.
Another look at Kaz Brekker and Inej:
As well as Jesper and Wylan:
Season 1 ended with Nina Zenik and Matthias (Calahan Skogman) meeting the rest of the Crows aboard a boat to Ketterdam. In season 2, they’ll be a proper part of the team. Here’s a new shot of Matthias, shirtless and looking ready to fight somebody:
Lastly, we get our first good look at some of the new characters coming in season 2. First up we have the twins Tolya and Tamar, played by Lewis Tan and Anna Leong Brophy respectively:
Tamar and Tolya are a pair of renegade Grisha Heartrenders, meaning they can use their magic to do all sorts of damage to their enemies’ internal organs. But as we see in the picture above, they don’t rely solely on those powers. They fight with weapons as well
First image of Patrick Gibso as Sturmhond in Shadow and Bone season 2
Tamar and Tolya serve under the mysterious Sturmhond, a notorious pirate captain. And lo, we get our first look at the man himself:
Strumhond is played by Patrick Gibson. Book readers will probably be pretty excited about this one; Sturmhond is a particularly beloved character in the Grishaverse for…reasons.
Shadow and Bone season 2 is coming to Netflix on March 16, 2023!
