Why fans are convinced Bella Ramsey will be recast for The Last of Us season 2 (And why it won’t happen)

HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us has taken the TV world by storm, and it’s only just beginning. The post-apocalyptic drama follows hardened survivor Joel (Pedro Pascal) and the teenage girl he’s tasked with protecting: Ellie (Bella Ramsey). It’s seen incredibly impressive viewership numbers that continue to grow. Already, just three weeks in, The Last of Us is one of the network’s most popular series, up there with House of the Dragon, Euphoria, and The White Lotus. I mean, HBO knows how to make a show, right?

The most recent episode of The Last of Us is being hailed by many as one of the greatest in TV history, and I’m not exaggerating. There are only good things on the horizon for this show, which was also just renewed for a second season. But now, according to a recent report from Forbes, there are fans who are convinced there’ll be a major cast shake-up when it comes time to start filming season 2, something that… just isn’t going to happen.

As Forbes explains, there’s a time jump between the two Last of Us games currently on the market, leading many to believe Bella Ramsey will be recast as Ellie. And it looks like people really do think that. If you go on Twitter and search “Bella Ramsey recast” or any variation of it, there’s a ton of speculation.

Fortunately, there are other tweets debunking this idea, with a YouTuber with a blue checkmark named @DomTheBomb getting some good engagement by setting the record straight.

Will Bella Ramsey be recast as Ellie in The Last of Us season 2?

So let’s go on the record and also debunk this idea. Bella Ramsey will not be recast as Ellie in The Last of Us season 2; there’s no reason for it.

The first season of The Last of Us adapts the first game, when Ellie is around 14 years old. The second season will adapt The Last of Us Part II. At the start of that game, Ellie is 19 years old. Ramsey is currently 19 years old; she’s playing younger in season 1. When they start filming the second season, she’ll be a bit older than that, but hardly so old that they’ll need to recast the role. Casting an aged-up version of Ellie wouldn’t make any sense.

Plus, the Game of Thrones actor has already confirmed she’ll be in the second season when reacting to the renewal news:

But even to the tweet above, Ramsey received several responses from internet trolls who told her that she’s actually going to be recast. What? I guess some people will have to wait for The Last of Us season 2 trailer to drop to finally realize Ramsey will, in fact, be back as Ellie.

As someone who absolutely loves Ramsey in the role of Ellie, I can’t wait to see her portrayal in the next season. But for now, I’ll continue enjoying The Last of Us season 1 and Ramsey’s awesome chemistry with Pedro Pascal.
