House of the Dragon season 2 is not coming in April 2023

HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon was one of the biggest new fantasy shows to premiere in 2022. Based on George R.R. Martin’s fake history book Fire & Blood, the series detailed the beginning of the end for House Targaryen. At the start of the series, they are at the height of their power. By the end of season 1, they stand on the brink of a civil war over who should sit the Iron Throne. And by the end of the series, well…

Given the show’s massive success, it’s no surprise that the anticipation is high for the show’s forthcoming second season. Much of season 1 was spent setting the stage by introducing the various players, as well as making sure we understood why they loved or hated one another. But with season 2, the brutal civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons will begin in earnest.

But when will it grace our screens? Let’s discuss the latest news.

House of the Dragon season 2 release date speculation

Given the immensity of producing a show like House of the Dragon, it should come as no surprise that we won’t get to watch season 2 this April. That said, the show is slated to begin filming very soon, so there’s a lot to get excited about.

There have been other updates as well, such as the announcement that The Crown writer David Hancock has joined the writing team House of the Dragon season 2, penning two of its 10 episodes. Beyond that, Milly Alcock confirmed that we won’t be seeing any flashbacks of young Rhaenyra Targaryen. Matt Smith, who plays the rogue prince Daemon Targaryen, also revealed that the scripts for season 2 were “really late.” Thankfully, in the same breath he confirmed that he had received them, which makes it sound like things are still on track for season 2 to begin filming shortly.

Expect frequent updates on House of the Dragon in the coming months as production on season 2 gets rolling. House of the Dragon season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.
