Dune: Part Two will be “a f*cking gut punch,” says Rebecca Ferguson (Lady Jessica)
By Daniel Roman
Dune: Part Two is one of the most anticipated sci-fi movies of the year, and with good cause. The first installment of director Denis Villeneuve’s visionary adaptation of Frank Herbert’s iconic 1965 Dune novel was a critical and commercial success, stacked with A-list actors and sandworms big enough to swallow a spice processing plant whole. It only adapted the first half of Herbert’s novel; for the rest, we’ll have to go back to theaters this fall for Part Two.
Rebecca Ferguson (Lady Jessica): Dune: Part One is “nothing compared to number two”
Actor Rebecca Ferguson plays Paul Atreides’ mother Lady Jessica, and she was happy to hype the new movie to Collider:
"I’m smiling so much right now. It’s so fucking good. I get emotional talking about it because I love Denny [Villeneuve] and I love Greig [Fraser] and I love the team. But dude, number one is phenomenal and big and grandiose, and then you go close-ups and the imagery and the acting. Yeah, it’s all great. It’s fucking nothing compared to number two. Number two, it’s like a fucking gut punch. It’s unreal.I haven’t seen the film. I’ve read the script. I’ve seen the footage. I’ve come onto set when I’m not filming, which by the way I don’t do because I’m too busy, tired, and I don’t really care. I’m done. I wanted to see the setups. I wanted to see Austin Butler do what he was doing. It’s unbelievable. There are no words. The costumes, [Jacqueline West’s] costumes, what Austin’s bringing to that character, what Christopher Walken does. I mean, it’s unreal."
Ferguson lavished praise on her fellow cast members, which is pretty understandable considering how many talented people are involved. In addition to actors like Timothée Chalamet (Paul Atreides), Zendaya (Chani), Stellan Skarsgård (Baron Harkonnen), Dave Bautista (Glossu Rabban), Josh Brolin (Gurney Halleck), and Javier Bardem (Stilgar), the sequel will bring on major new characters played by Florence Pugh (Princess Irulan), Austin Butler (Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen), and even Christopher Walken as the emperor of the freakin’ galaxy, Shaddam IV.
“Their characters are huge and important, and they are emperors, and they are princesses, and they are brutal killers, and they are gory,” Ferguson said. “They are fully and utterly needed to make the spectacle that it is, and it’s the crème de la fucking crème of actors. That’s what it brings.”
In addition to starring in Dune: Part Two, Ferguson produced and starred in Apple TV+’s Silo, which just wrapped its first season last week and is moving ahead with production on season 2. Beyond that, she appears in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One, and has just been announced to be playing a mercenary on a bloody quest for revenge in a film adaptation of fantasy author Joe Abercrombie’s First Law book Best Served Cold. We’ll be seeing a lot more of Ferguson in the days to come.
Dune: Part Two is due out in theaters on November 3.
