The Wheel of Time cast spills new season 2 details and spoilers!
By Daniel Roman
Mat has been in “a cell for months” at the start of The Wheel of Time season 2
We end with a three-person interview with Dónal Finn (Mat), Ceara Coveney (Elayne) and Marcus Rutherford (Perrin). Each dropped new clues about season 2, so talk about each we must!
Finn started things off, reiterating that his first scenes in The Wheel of Time all took place in one room, and that Kate Fleetwood (Liandrin) was his “phenomenal” scene partner. Finn praised Fleetwood and season 2 premiere director Thomas Napper, as well as the crew which made the space work as well as it did. He also revealed that Mat begins the season imprisoned, which sounds like it’s drawing from The Dragon Reborn, the third book of the series:
"Those days on set I get to come in really early on, and it’s a cell that Mat has been in for months at a time. So I kind of got time to sit in that space before we did any work, and to kind of feel my feet on the ground and to make up stories about what he’s done in the room and where he’s spent his time and all that."
Elayne will seemingly be introduced in Episode 2 of The Wheel of Time season 2
Finn and his co-star Ceara Coveney are two of the actors joining The Wheel of Time this season with the biggest roles to fill. Coveney’s character, Elayne Trakand, is the daughter heir to Andor, a powerful nation which will be central to the overarching story of the series. These interviews seemingly confirmed that Elayne will make her debut in the season’s second episode, where we’ll see her opposite Egwene (Madeleine Madden).
“I think I was really blessed to kind of be working with Madeleine on those first episodes,” said Coveney. “She’s an incredible actress with an incredible body of work behind her.”
"So not only was she kind of just so supportive and really helped me with those first scenes, but it was great to play alongside Egwene. And she really has a sense when you’re kind of working against her that she knows who she is, and I think that was such a challenge to play against as Elayne, because I think she thinks she knows she is and she knows she’s going to be queen one day. She thought she knew everything and then she’s meeting this character and she’s like ‘oh wow, she’s maybe braver than I am and I’m meant to be the queen, like I need to be brave.’ So it was amazing to have that energy to work off, and yeah, I can never sing Madeleine’s praises enough."
Perrin and Ingtar will discuss killing Padan Fain in The Wheel of Time season 2
Last but certainly not least we check in with Perrin, played by Marcus Rutherford. When we spoke to Rutherford in our own interview, he teased that “wolves and violence” lay ahead for Perrin in season 2. From the sounds of things, he wasn’t kidding.
During the Rotten Tomatoes interview, Rutherford was asked about one particular scene in the season 2 premiere, where Perrin and the Shienaran commander Ingtar Shinowa (Gregg Chilingirian) discuss Perrin’s desire to murder Padan Fain, the merchant who revealed himself to be a darkfriend during the season 1 finale before stealing the Horn of Valere. The search for Padan Fain is another big part of The Great Hunt, so it makes sense that Perrin and Ingtar might be on the road looking for him this season.
“I think it was quite nice, because he doesn’t really talk that much in season 1,” Rutherford said of a particular scene he shares with Chilingirian.
"I think [director Thomas Napper] gave and kind of set this scene, and it felt like two mates talking, like two men probably just struggling to actually get their feelings out with Perrin and Ingtar. And we kind of set it almost in like a contemporary context. I think Perrin’s obviously been holding this in for so long, but I think there’s been a camaraderie through the journey when we find them. So I think opening up to Ingtar at that moment…it felt like something had been bubbling underneath. I think there’s a rage like he says that’s inside of him that he’s quite scared of, and I think he’s quite intimidated of. And I think it’s worrisome because it might bring back memories of what happened in that first episode in season 1."
“So I think he’s still a character that’s showing all his emotions yet, but it was really nice in those first kind of scenes to go through the gears a bit and show a different side to him,” Rutherford added.
That’s quite a lot to chew over for now. We certainly know a lot more about the early episodes of The Wheel of Time season 2 than we did before. Which bits got you the most excited? Which have you curious? Let’s discuss in the comments.
The Wheel of Time season 2 drops its three-episode premiere September 1 on Prime Video.
