Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros is one of the most popular fantasy books since its release in 2023. Fourth Wing kicked off The Empyrean series, which has soared to heights few fantasy romance books have achieved with the best-selling releases of Iron Flame and Onyx Storm.
Obviously, if you just finished Fourth Wing, you need to read Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. Unfortunately, it's going to be quite a long wait for the fourth book of The Empyrean series. The latest reports suggest Yarros won't be publishing that book until 2027 at the earliest.
We also have the upcoming Fourth Wing TV series on Prime Video to wait for, too, but that's not coming anytime soon, either.
So, if you've read all three books and you're patiently waiting for the fourth book of The Empyrean series, you need another book to read. You're in luck because I picked three of my favorite romantasy books for you to read next. Each book I've picked feels like Fourth Wing in at least some respects, but they're also the first book of a series. You could, in theory, get hooked on these books and read the full series while you wait for the fourth book of The Empyrean series.
Up first we have Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Throne of Glass is the first book of Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series, which is one of my favorite fantasy series of all time. I write about it every chance I get, and I recommend it all the time.Â
If you’re new to fantasy or looking for an absolute page turner, this is the series for you. It definitely shares some similarities with Fourth Wing, including its strong and wicked smart protagonists, epic twists and turns, and an unmatched group of villains.
Throne of Glass follows an assassin, Celaena Sardothien, who is selected to compete in a tournament of sorts to become the King of Adarlan’s personal spy. There, Celaena learns secrets she never dreamed possible.Â
If you’re a fan of the Fae, this is the book series for you. And it's even better than ACOTAR. I know I might be alone in that, but it’s so good! There are seven books in the Throne of Glass book series, so that should keep you busy for a while!

The Road of Bones by Demi Winters
The Road of Bones is the first book in Demi Winters’ The Ashen Series. If you like a blend of Vikings, Norse mythology, and fantasy with a side of romance, this is the book series for you.Â
The series follows Silla, a young woman who is forced to take the Road of Bones to safety after her father is murdered by the Crown’s forces. Silla falls in with a band of ruthless Viking-like warriors to survive the journey, which is full of twists, lies, monsters, and more.Â
There are two other books from the series already published, including Kingdom of Claw and Dawn of the North. Winters has at least two more books in the series planned.Â
The Road of Bones probably has the least in common with Fourth Wing of the other books on this list, but that doesn’t make it any less great. I have no doubt that Fourth Wing fans will fall in love with this story.Â

Dire Bound by Sable Sorensen
Dire Bound is the top pick to read if you love Fourth Wing right now! There's just not another book I would recommend more than this one. It's like Fourth Wing, but instead of dragons and riders, we have direwolves and riders. It's outstanding!
The story revolves around Meryn, a young woman from the rough part of an ancient kingdom. After growing up in poverty and fighting, literally, to survive, Meryn's sister is taken by the enemy of her country. Meryn takes matters into her own hands and joins her country's forces in order to get her sister back. Things don't go as planned. Meryn is chosen by the country's most elite forces and becomes bonded with a direwolf. In order to survive and save her sister, Meryn must complete a series of life-or-death challenges.
Dire Bound is the first book in Sable Sorensen's Wolves of Ruin book series. Fury Bound, the second book in the series, will be released on May 5, 2026. You have just enough time to read Dire Bound in time for the second book's release.
If you haven't read any of these books yet and you love Fourth Wing, I would probably start with Dire Bound for a few reasons. First, it's the most similar to Fourth Wing in story and just overall vibe. We also have a new book in the series, Fury Bound, coming very soon, and it's going to blow up on social media. If you want to be a part of that conversation, I would probably jump on the bandwagon right now.
If you're looking for a series with a lot more books to occupy your time and experience a complete story with an epic ending, Throne of Glass is the pick!
Whatever you read first, though, I would definitely add all three books to your reading list. They're all fantastic and perfect for fans of Fourth Wing.
