With House of the Dragon season 3 over and done with after the long wait it took us to get there, it’s time for some reflection. And you want to know what I’m really reflecting on? The dragons that we didn’t get nearly enough of—or haven’t seen at all.
From dragons that have been kept under wraps to dragons we only saw a few times, these are the dragons for season 3 that I truly believe deserved a lot more screen time.
Syrax
You’re telling me that in the season where Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) literally becomes the Queen of the Seven Kingdoms, we barely see her dragon? Now that’s just pure stupidity at its finest.
I’m not saying we didn’t see Syrax, because we did have a few decent moments. One of the best ones was the most ambitious dragon scene in the series so far, where it felt like money was just thrown at the TV screen to make the dragons look as realistic as possible. And Syrax was a part of that dragon fight.
But for a dragon queen, it felt like everyone else was doing the riding and Rhaenyra was just… stuck inside. Granted, you can say that it’s because she’s a queen and she can’t really risk herself, but there were certainly moments throughout the season where the use of Syrax would have helped with a lot of problems.
Either way, with season 4 confirmed as the last season, I hope to see Syrax much more, given her special bond with Rhaenyra.
Sunfyre
I didn’t think I’d walk away from season 3 being a Team Green fan, but here I am, wanting to see one of their dragons way more.
Okay, let’s correct that. I’m by no means a full Team Green turncoat. I’m more of, “I see the path Rhaenyra is going down and do not subscribe to that.” And quite frankly, I liked Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney) this season and his whole arc, which is why, when Sunfyre turned out to be alive after his critical wounds at the Battle of the Gullet, all I could think about was, “I want MORE zombie dragon!”
It’s not really a zombie dragon—not like how Viserion was in Game of Thrones—but I wanted to see if it had gained powers in any way, any strength, or any of that. It felt like we only got that really cool scene with Aegon and Sunfyre in the background, and then we were given nothing. I need season 4 to give me more.
Dreamfyre
Ah, my poor Dreamfyre.
For a season that focused very heavily on Helaena (Phia Saban), it was as if her dragon was just entirely forgotten. Sure, she was locked in the dragon pit, so the dragons that are down there are rarely seen. But you’d think that we would have seen her more than once.
And the only time we saw Dreamfyre was in one of Helaena’s visions, which predicted a certain event that might happen later in the show. We never got to see her ride or even interact with the creature. It was a shame, especially since Dreamfyre looked really different in comparison to many of the other dragons.
Vhagar
This goes without saying.
For the last two seasons, Vhagar has been a focal-point dragon. He’s the largest in the entire series and has been the bane of everyone’s existence except for Aemond (Ewan Mitchell), and even then, it feels like he can’t control the dragon whatsoever.
But we literally saw Vhagar once in season 3, and that’s it—only when she flew Aemond to Harrenhal, and then she just straight up vanished. We still don’t know where the heck Vhagar is, or what? You’re telling me this giant-ass dragon is just roaming around somewhere, completely unknown?
HOW DO YOU LOSE THAT BIG OF A DRAGON????
I’m sorry, my crash-out is done, but come on. Season 4 better bring her back.
Cannibal
So maybe this is a little preview of what I want season 4 to have, but production has hinted time and time again that Cannibal might appear in season 4, and my biggest complaint is that we didn’t see this dragon at all during season 3. No one’s even mentioned it yet.
If you don’t know what Cannibal is, he’s a dragon who basically eats other dragons. Not full-on, fully grown ones, but the corpses, as well as baby dragons and eggs. Showrunner Ryan Condal teased other wild dragons would appear in the show, and production designs have even shown Cannibal designs being discussed in art forms.
With season 4 coming and many, many dragon deaths arriving soon, now would be the perfect time to bring him into the fold, just to scare the heck out of fans that dragons can eat other dragons. It would be fun. But only time will tell. Honestly, if just three of the above dragons get just a little more screen time in season 4, I’ll be happy.
