A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms continues tonight as the tournament at Ashford Meadow begins and Dunk (Peter Claffey) prepares to make his debut as a knight. Though he’s faced a few hiccups along the way, luck might just be on his side—with the help of his squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), and Prince Baelor Targaryen (Bertie Carvel), of course.
We got to meet the Targaryens in episode 2 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, introducing us to princes of the realm and showing us the state of their house. They might still sit the Iron Throne all these years after House of the Dragon, but the Targaryens are without dragons and seem to be a bit disorderly. We learn that Prince Maeker’s (Sam Spruell) two sons—Daeron and Aegon—are missing, a plot point that’s sure to come up again this season.

Episode 3 synopsis

Along with new photos from episode 2, which give us a sneak peek at what’s to come, HBO has released a plot summary:
“After Egg attempts to train Dunk's uncooperative horse, Dunk teaches his new squire an important skill. As they take in the tourney's first full day of events, Dunk receives a proposition from the Ashford steward that could help secure his future.”
Last week’s episode, “Hard Salt Beef,” ended with a jousting sequence as the tourney kicked off with an exciting nighttime event. But while Dunk has been looking forward to this since he decided he’d compete in the tourney, seeing it play out is when reality starts to sink in. The knights participating are very skilled and very experienced, and then there’s the Targaryen princes. Can he really compete with them?
Per the synopsis, Dunk may be looking at the tourney differently after episode 3 when he receives a certain proposition. We’ll have to wait and see what exactly that entails.
Episode 3 preview
Want an even closer look at A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode 3 before it releases this evening? Don’t worry, this week’s preview doesn’t spoil nearly as much as the “in the weeks ahead” teaser did! Watch below:
This week’s episode seems to have a little bit of everything. There’s the endearing, lighthearted side to Dunk and Egg’s relationship, with the preview using fun music at the start and including a scene of the two characters having silly banter. But there’s also the tourney, full of thrilling matchups, and then there’s Aerion (Finn Bennett). The Targaryen prince seems to be emerging as a threat, and the fact that the preview includes a scene with blood on his mouth doesn’t make him look like he plays well with others.
And then there’s the hilarious line in the preview from Raymun Fossaway (Shaun Thomas), who tells Dunk of the Targaryens: “They’re incestuous aliens.” Not the most inaccurate way to describe them, I suppose.
Be sure to tune into A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms tonight at 10:00 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max. It’s going to be a big episode, serving as a turning point for several characters.
