Despite A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 only recently ending, progress on season 2 has been underway since December 2025. The production began in Belfast, Ireland, before shifting to Gran Canaria, Spain, to better shoot the scorched landscapes as depicted in George R.R. Martin's second Dunk & Egg novella, The Sworn Sword.

The Sworn Sword is set a couple of years after the events of season 1 and around 15 years following the Blackfyre Rebellion. It continues the adventures of Dunk (Peter Claffey) and Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) as they enter the Reach and find themselves in the service of proud veteran knight Ser Eustace Osgrey of Standfast. However, political tensions arise, and then Dunk becomes embroiled in a conflict over land rights with the mysterious Lady Rohanne Webber of Coldmoat, who is—rightly or wrongly-- believed to be an old witch responsible for the deaths of her four husbands. Suffice to say, Dunk is very out of his depth in this one.

With filming ongoing, there's plenty of casting news coming our way. In fact, a Variety report has confirmed that Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody, The Pale Blue Eye) has been cast as Lady Rohanne, while BAFTA nominee Peter Mullan (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) will play Ser Eustace Osgrey.

In addition, Babou Ceesay (Alien: Earth) has been cast as hedge knight Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield.

With these new cast members, showrunner Ira Parker is elated, but there's one star in particular who he's wanted to work with for a while. That is Peter Mullan. Speaking of Mullan's casting, Parker told IGN that it “is just my favorite thing in the whole world because I remember when I saw him on Top of the Lake and just thought, ‘One day I'm going to figure out how to work with that actor.’ And so for this to happen is very nice.”

In The Sworn Sword, Duncan finds himself entering the service of Ser Eustace Osgrey, the head of House Osgrey of Standfast, a castle in The Reach. An aging veteran knight, Ser Eustace is proud and stubborn. He's honorable with heroic ancestors and fiercely loyal -- but undoubtedly loyal to a fault. He ardently believes himself honorable, so much so that he sees the deaths of his three sons as a noble sacrifice to their king.

Dunk's service to Ser Eustace is to protect his lands, namely from his nemesis Lady Rohanne Webber, who orders the death of a peasant where he rules. Ser Eustace hires a number of hedge knights to defend his cause, which notably includes the foul-tempered and volatile Ser Bennis of the Brown Shield.

As for season 2, filming is ongoing, and Parker hopes that it'll be even better than season 1, despite a slightly smaller scope and challenges surrounding budget. "It’ll still be six episodes," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

"I think the scope will be the same, maybe even smaller. The budget has stayed the same, but everything is more expensive due to inflation. Plus, book two takes place in a drought, so we can’t shoot exteriors in Belfast. We have to go to a sunny location with no water, which costs money — that’s a major expense that we did not have in season one. I’m having a lot of fun with season two. It’s going to be a different season, and, I hope, for the better.”

In the meantime, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 1 is now streaming on HBO Max.
