In January 2026, HBO debuted A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which represented a very different style of show in the Game of Thrones universe. Unlike the main show and House of the Dragon, the prequel dialed back on huge worldbuilding and multi-perspective storytelling. Instead, it focused on the story of lowly hedge knight Ser Duncan (Peter Claffey), trying to make his way as a knight in the Westeros, alongside his newfound companion Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell), who is really Prince Aegon Targaryen, the youngest son of Prince Maekar Targaryen (Sam Spruell).
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was an instant smash hit. In fact, the series was even renewed for another season before season 1 had even premiered. Season 2 will adapt George R.R. Martin's Dunk & Egg novella "The Sworn Sword," which sees Dunk enter the service of elderly Ser Eustace Osgrey (Peter Mullan) in the drought-stricken Reach, where they find themselves caught in the middle of his political land disagreements with Lady Rohanne Webber (Lucy Boynton).
The upcoming season began filming in Belfast, Northern Ireland in December 2025. It is also filming in Gran Canaria, Spain which provides more accurate-looking landscapes for the draught in the Reach. For star Dexter Sol Ansell, Season 2 is particularly exciting. “It’s the next story and we’re filming in Gran Canaria so it’s going to be fun,” he said in an interview with ODE.
What's more, he gets to be involved in more action sequences. In season 1, Egg's biggest strength was his identity; being a Targaryen wields enough power to strike fear into any opponent. Egg pulled this card when he prevented Aerion from mutilating Dunk. Going into season 2, it appears that Egg may have a more physical presence. "I get a bit more action so that’s so very fun,” he teased. "I get to do some action training and some fun stuff.”
He also demonstrated some of his action moves and poses. They need a little work, but we'll let him off as he was put on the spot. It'll take some more training before he can face Ser Duncan the Tall, that's for sure.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 is expected to wrap in June 2026. No release date has been set, but sometime in 2027 seems like a solid estimate. Season 1 is now streaming on HBO Max. Next up in the Game of Thrones franchise is House of the Dragon season 3, debuting this summer.
