Back in July 2026, it was announced that Amazon's God of War TV series would need to recast its lead actor, Ryan Hurst. Unfortunately, the Sons of Anarchy actor tore his bicep while filming a stunt for the upcoming Prime Video show and had to undergo surgery. Hurst is now recovering from the injury, but this process could have delayed God of War's filming until next year. As such, the studio was faced with the difficult decision of finding a new Ghost of Sparta, and a new actor has risen to the occasion.
Dave Bautista is officially set to bring Kratos to life in Amazon's God of War. The WWE star recently bulked up to play the villain of the upcoming Highlander movie, meaning he is already in shape for a physically demanding role like Kratos. Besides, Bautista is no stranger to appearing in action-heavy projects, which means he is an ideal choice to join God of War with such short preparation time. The one downside is that this change means the series will not come out anytime soon.
Production for Prime Video's God of War will start from scratch with Dave Bautista as Kratos
As reported by Deadline, filming for God of War is expected to resume in mid-October in Vancouver, and production "is starting from scratch as no footage from the original shoot is expected to be used." Since Ryan Hurst was the show's titular star before the injury, it makes sense why none of the original material can be used for the final cut. However, this means that four months' worth of footage will need to be refilmed.

God of War didn't have a set release date prior to the recast, but it was widely speculated that late 2027 would be the earliest the series would see the light of day. Now that production is starting over, we're looking at a delay of around seven or eight months, meaning God of War will potentially be released in mid-2028.
On the bright side, the upcoming Prime Video series was picked up for two seasons that will be filmed concurrently. That means there won't be a large gap between releases, even if the initial wait turns out to be longer than expected. Besides, we still have the upcoming God of War Laufey video game to look forward to while the Amazon show comes our way.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely we'll ever see what Ryan Hurst's portrayal of Kratos was meant to be like. The actor recently posted a behind-the-scenes look of himself as the Ghost of Sparta, and it's clear he would've been an amazing choice for the role. However, Bautista's extensive background is the perfect evidence that he can portray a man driven by rage who also has a few vulnerable moments along the way, especially next to his son Atreus (Callum Vinson). Besides, Amazon now has the opportunity to tweak the character's designs, which weren't well received by fans.
Interestingly, it has been reported that the roles of Atreus and Thrud (Island Austin) will also be recast for the second season of Prime Video's God of War as part of a major time jump. This could loosely mimic the events of the games, given that there was a three-year gap between the 2018 title and its sequel. The key difference is that the time jump will be extended to five years in the live-action adaptation.
With a bit of luck, it won't be long before we get our first look at Dave Bautista as Kratos. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the show's release. Production for Amazon's God of War is expected to resume in mid-October 2026.
