Just as the gods of Olympus struggled to put up a fight against Kratos, Amazon has had a very difficult time bringing its live-action God of War series to life. Ryan Hurst—better known for his role as Harry Winston in Sons of Anarchy—was originally set to play Kratos on the small screen, and fans even got a first look at him in costume right next to Callum Vinson's Atreus. Unfortunately, Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt for the upcoming Prime Video show, and he had to undergo surgery soon after.
Fortunately, Hurst's surgery went well, but a full recovery is not expected to happen until 2027. Since Amazon couldn't pause filming for such a long period, the studio found itself in the position of needing to recast the role and undergo reshoots with a new actor. As such, fans were eager to learn who the baton (or Leviathan Axe?) would be passed to, and it seems we finally have an answer.
Dave Bautista is reportedly in talks to play Kratos in Prime Video's God of War
The Norse gods should gear up for a monumental war as they're about to face a terrifying new challenger. As reported by Deadline, Dave Bautista is in negotiations to play Kratos in Prime Video's God of War following Hurst's unfortunate injury.
Bautista is no stranger to action-focused franchises, as he portrayed the roles of Drax in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, Glossu Rabban in the Dune franchise, and Mr. Hinx in the James Bond film Spectre. Recently, Dave Bautista physically bulked up to portray the role of The Kurgan in the upcoming Highlander movie, which means he's already in shape to play Kratos.
Filming for Prime Video's God of War is expected to resume in mid-October in Vancouver, so an official announcement about Kratos's recast should be expected to come our way soon. Furthermore, this could also be Amazon's opportunity to tweak the character designs, after the first look at Kratos and Atreus was met with mixed to negative reactions from fans.
Perhaps the biggest concern regarding a possible Dave Bautista casting is the actor's age. Prime Video's God of War was picked up for two seasons, which will be filmed concurrently. However, it wouldn't be far-fetched to assume that Amazon could look to expand the story if the first batch of episodes is released to critical and commercial success. In the modern age of television, it's normal for two years to pass in between seasons, at the very least. So, if God of War is ever renewed for a third season (or beyond), there's a chance that Bautista could be playing this physically demanding role in his 60s.
On the bright side, Dave Bautista has played dramatically heavy roles in his career, such as Sapper Morton in Blade Runner 2049. That means he has the range to portray some of Kratos's vulnerable moments, which, albeit very rare, definitely happen on a few occasions. Furthermore, Bautista's wrestling background and previous work in Guardians of the Galaxy mean he has the experience needed to portray a character that, more often than not, is known for his pure, unstoppable rage.
The recast and pause in filming for Prime Video's God of War is likely to push the series back to a 2028 release date. Fortunately, there's plenty more action to come in the franchise in the meantime, as God of War Laufey is set for a February 2027 release, and it has been confirmed that yet another game starring Kratos is in the works. That means there are plenty of adventures to look forward to in this violent and relentless world, and we can't wait to see how they all pan out.
