Get your wands up, Harry Potter fans, because another star from the Harry Potter films is coming to the Broadway stage in New York.
According to the official Harry Potter website, it was confirmed that Rupert Grint, known for his portrayal of Ron Weasley in the movies, will reprise his role in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. He will play the adult version of Ron.
Grint gave a statement about how excited he was to play this role once again:
“Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life. There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting. The first time I saw Cursed Child onstage, I was blown away and I can’t wait to set foot back on platform 9 ¾ and pick up where I left off. I am overjoyed to join this exceptional cast and crew at the Lyric Theatre this winter.”
The last time Grint was on Broadway was back in 2014, when he portrayed Franklin Finger in the play It’s Only a Play. But now he’ll be back in the Wizarding World once more. And judging from his statement, the actor sounds truly excited.
What is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child about?
The play, for those who don’t know, takes place about 19 years in the future, right after the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It mainly follows the children of the core trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione). Still, it involves the Malfoys a decent amount, as Harry’s son, Albus, becomes close friends with Scorpius Malfoy (Draco’s son), which, of course, causes drama.
While the children are at Hogwarts, we also see into the adult lives of the core trio, and that’s how Ron is involved. The trio, as well as the kids, must deal with a new threat to their lives when a mysterious woman makes it her mission to try to bring the Dark Lord back to power. Without revealing any twists, it gets wild.
This isn’t the first time a former Harry Potter star has returned to their role from the films. Tom Felton returned as Draco Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in a run that began in 2025 and was a major success. In fact, it was so successful that the Lyric Theatre (where the Broadway show is) extended his run countless times until recently, when they announced his final extension.
Grint is set to reprise the role beginning in February, specifically on Feb. 2, 2027. His run will last until May 30, 2027, unless he receives an extension. But could you imagine how well this show would do if both of them were there at the same time? I fear Harry Potter fans would never recover.
Unfortunately, Felton’s time as Malfoy will end in January 2027 before Grint's run begins, but who really knows, as the ticket sales from his run in the show caused the numbers to shoot up. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child was already one of the highest-grossing plays ever before Felton joined, and those sales are only going to climb with Grint joining the production.
Honestly, this has been a great time for anyone to be a Harry Potter fan. Aside from Grint returning, there’s the new Harry Potter series that will premiere on HBO at the end of 2026, on Christmas, which will only continue to expand the franchise's legacy. There's also a new sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, so fans have that to look forward to (whenever it comes out, because these games take so much time to make).
Even then, I can’t get over the amount of stuff that Harry Potter fans have been given. And seeing someone like Rupert Grint return to the series we all love so much is a gift. I have a feeling that anyone who gets to see his performance will love it.
