After many fits and starts, Netflix has carved out a solid niche for itself as one of the only streaming studios that is successfully taking beloved animated shows and turning them into well-received live-action series. 2026 is shaping up to be their biggest year yet on that front. We've already gotten the excellent second season of One Piece, based on the manga and anime from Eiichiro Oda. Now, Netflix has just confirmed the release date for Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2!

The release date of June 25 was revealed in a new behind-the-scenes video that takes fans inside the filming of season 2. Watch, then we'll discuss:

Aang is growing up in Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2

Avatar takes place in an East Asian-inspired fantasy world where gifted individuals known as benders can control the elements. But only the Avatar can control all four: water, wind, earth, and air. The catch is that this particular Avatar is a young kid named Aang, who's a total goofball. As the last living airbender, Aang must master the rest of the elements in order to stop the nefarious forces of the Fire Nation from conquering the world.

Season 1 of Netflix's live-action adaptation introduced us to Aang as he met his two closest friends, siblings Katara (Kiawentiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousely) of the water tribe, and clashed with his rival, the Fire Nation prince Zuko (Dallas Liu). The show's first outing did more right than it did wrong, and by the looks of things, season 2 is going to step things up significantly as it tackles some of the most iconic storylines from the animated series by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. We're going to Ba Sing Se!

Beyond the excitement of seeing some of those key locales and fan-favorite characters like Toph Beifong (Miya Cech) in the mix, the other thing that stands out to me the most about this trailer is just how much Aang and his pals have grown up since season 1. The show's first season filmed all the way back in late 2021 and early 2022, and premiered on Netflix on February 22, 2024. The back-to-back production on seasons 2 and 3 didn't get underway until October 2024, meaning there was a solid three-year gap between when the show's young actors filmed their first season and their second.

That gap is somewhat noticeable here, especially with Cormier, who looks like he's all grown up. The animated series features a pint-sized Aang for pretty much the entirety of its run, so this is a unique challenge the Netflix show faces because of the streamer's reluctance to go all-in on the series from the start. Thankfully, season 3 has already wrapped filming, so don't expect Aang to be in his 20s or anything by the time that one drops.

Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 premieres June 25 on Netflix. That also happens to be the month that House of the Dragon season 3 starts airing on HBO and The Vampire Lestat begins its run on AMC. It should be a packed month of fantasy goodness!
