Carrie White may not have gotten the prom of her dreams, but she'll get another chance at happiness. Today Prime Video announced that its new horror series Carrie will return for a second season. Mike Flanagan's modernized take on Stephen King's iconic 1972 debut novel will continue, even though the first season covered the entirety of the source material. The world is Carrie's oyster, and it'll be very exciting to see what she and Flanagan do with it.
Prime Video made the announcement via social media with a 22 second video highlighting online comments from fans begging for the follow-up, before fading out the show's logo to a blood-red "season 2."

Will Carrie have a season 2 and what will happen in it?
Now that we know Carrie is getting a second season, it's time to start speculating about where things could go. The prom serves as the culmination of King's novel, with Carrie White getting stabbed by her mother afterward and dying. In the show, however, Carrie (Summer H. Howell) leaves town with the astral projector Emaline (Thalia Dudek). We have no idea where they're going or what comes next, though all signs seem to point toward a broadening universe based on The Dark Tower, Stephen King's meta-textual magnum opus that connects most of his seemingly disparate horror novels.
Ahead of Carrie's premiere, Mike Flanagan teased a three season arc that he has in mind for the character. It looks like we're one step closer to seeing it realized.
“For 50 years, audiences have known and gravitated to Carrie White’s story. From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom, and I’m incredibly grateful for Stephen’s trust and support in exploring what comes next,” Flanagan said in a statement accompanying the renewal (via Deadline).
“I can’t wait for audiences to get to see what’s down the road for Carrie White,” King added. “Mike Flanagan and I are excited about what comes next. It’s bound to be thrilling.”

The fact that Stephen King is so emphatically on board with this sort of massive deviation from his novel is extremely intriguing. He recently called Mike Flanagan his "favorite adapter" of his work, so it sounds like the acclaimed horror writer-director very much has King's blessing. If it ends up tying Carrie together with a wider universe of Stephen King shows revolving around The Dark Tower, that would be very understandable. That seven-book series is extremely dense and notoriously difficult to tackle, and the only way to truly do it justice would involve telling other King stories as well. The original Carrie book predated The Dark Tower mythos, and isn't directly tied to it in any meaningful way, but for Prime Video's television shows it would make sense to use one of Stephen King's most recognizable stories as a vehicle to launch a larger saga.
If I had my guess, we'll probably be hearing more from Carrie White sometime in 2027, whether that's the debut of season 2 around October or filming updates keeping fans apprised. Stay tuned.
