When Daredevil premiered on Netflix in 2015, it quickly became one of the most popular Marvel shows of all time. Unlike the MCU at the time, the show didn't hold back on violence. It was gritty and brutal, focusing on street-level brawls rather than huge intergalactic wars and sci-fi stories. Daredevil was praised for its grounded and raw approach, a route Disney was always hesitant to take.
Sadly, Netflix axed Daredevil after three seasons; this was back when Disney was readying its own streaming service, Disney+, and it didn't want Marvel characters appearing elsewhere. Since then, Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock has been showing up across the MCU, making cameos in projects like Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk, and Echo. And in March, he'll make his triumphant solo return to our screens in Daredevil: Born Again.
The old team is back together for this revival, with Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson returning as Karen Page and Foggy Nelson, and Vincent D'Onofrio back as Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin. Despite the switch to Disney+, the show's producers are keen to continually reiterate that the show will remain as brutal — if not even more violent — than the original. But don't take it from me: showrunner Dario Scardapane has been bragging about the show's brutality.
“The level of violence is way up there for a Marvel/Disney show,” Scardapane told Empire. “I don’t think there’s anything else even in the ballpark. There’s a moment in this that is just absolutely batshit, and way past anything Netflix ever did.” Scardapane was a producer on The Punisher, one of the most violent shows ever, Marvel or otherwise. For him to say this is pretty telling indeed!
In addition, Vincent D'Onofrio also shared that the series takes Daredevil even deeper into Hell. “There’s a world in which you might think that if that show kept running, we’d be in this place eventually, or something like it,” says D’Onofrio. “But we’ve gone further in the darkness, the action, the nastiness.”
One immediate sign that the team has doubled down on the violence comes from the show's age rating. We reported a few weeks back that Born Again has been stamped with an 18+ rating by the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC).
Daredevil: Born Again premieres March 4, 2025 on Disney+.
