Due to "clerical issues," The Wheel of Time song not submitted for an Emmy

Fans are still upset that Amazon cancelled The Wheel of Time, and the company keeps rubbing salt in the wound.

Amazon cancelled The Wheel of Time about a month ago, much to the chagrin of fans who were enjoying the fantasy epic more than ever; the recent third season was easily the best yet, so to have Amazon pull the rug out from under the show right then was particularly galling.

One bright spot was the upcoming Emmys. The show may have been cancelled, but maybe it would get some posthumous honors at TV's biggest awards show. Amazon even mounted a bit of a campaign, pushing for "The Hills of Tanchico" — a bawdy song that Elayne sings in the episode "The Shadow in the Night" — in get nominated in the category of Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. As you can hear in the video above, the song richly deserves it.

But it ends up no. Last week, composer Nikhil Koparkar shared that the song wasn't on the Emmy ballot because of "an issue with Amazon's submission." He assured fans that they were working to resolve the problem. But apparently that didn't work, because he came back today to reveal that the song will not be on the ballot at all, "due to clerical issues."

I know Amazon isn't doing this to purposefully kick The Wheel of Time fans when they're down — I don't think they care about the show one way or another, which was the problem in the first place — but it sort of feels like that. "The Hills of Tanchico" montage above is a nice way to eulogize the song's chances of bringing home Emmy gold.

To be fair to Amazon, as loathe as I am to do that, if you look at the nominating ballots for the 2025 Emmy Awards, there are plenty of cast and crew members from The Wheel of Time up for consideration. Amazon has put forward cast and crew members for consideration in categories like Writing, Directing, Acting, Costumes, Cinematography, Casting, Production Design, Hairstyling, Stunt Coordinating, Sound Mixing, and for Outstanding Drama Series. And also for Music Coordination, which feels like another nudge in the ribs considering they dropped the ball on Outstanding Music and Lyrics.

Will the show actually be nominated in any of these categories? Nominations are announced on July 15, so we'll find out then. The ceremony will take place on September 14. In the meanwhile, fans are mounting a vigorous campaign to either get Amazon to reverse its decision, or to find The Wheel of Time a new home on another streamer.
