Stranger Things is one of the brightest jewels in Netflix's crown. The '80s-inspired paranormal series quickly became a global phenomenon, catapulting cast members like Millie Bobby Brown into stardom. Later this year, the show will air its fifth and final season, and the pressure is on for it to deliver a satisfying endgame.
After over a decade of working on Stranger Things and having to deal with a variety of hurdles — from a global pandemic to industry strikes to a rapidly aging cast, creators Matt and Ross Duffer are very ready to wave goodbye to their beloved series. At least, that's according to star Matthew Modine, who plays the enigmatic Dr. Brenner in the series.
"They want to finish big, and then they want to get on with their lives because they have a lot of stories that they want to tell," Modine told Screen Rant. "This has been a gilded cage in a way that it's a wonderful experience that they're having, but they want to get on with their lives. They want to graduate, they want to graduate and get on with their lives."
While it might sound like the Duffers want Stranger Things to conclude as quickly as possible, they're by no means rushing it. If the delays had any sort of silver lining, it means the creators have had myriad time to make the ending as perfect as possible. "It's going to be amazing," Modine added.
"" It's going to be... I mean, the Duffer Brothers are filmmakers, so I think that they wanted Season 1 to be one and done, like Zero Day, just a limited series. By, I don't know, three or four episodes of filming, Netflix saw it as something that was incredible and different than what anybody imagined and expanded into five seasons.""
In the final moments of Stranger Things season 4, after the malevolent Vecna was seemingly defeated, the hellish Upside Down dimension began to spill into the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. Clearly, the war has only just started.
Millie Bobby Brown has to watch Stranger Things 5 live with the rest of us
If you're at all worried about the cast accidentally ruining the final season for the rest of us, you'll be gladdened to know that the risk is greatly negated, thanks to many cast members not knowing exactly what happens.
Despite being one of the show's main characters, Millie Bobby Brown (Eleven) has never watched new seasons before they've dropped on Netflix. In an interview with Variety, she said as much: “We haven’t done that for 10 years,” she confirmed. “I don’t think they’re going to start on the last season.”
Obviously, she's aware of how the plot works out...she is very involved, after all. But in terms of the final product, she'll be watching it right beside us.
Stranger Things 5 premieres later this year on Netflix. There's no exact release date as of yet, although fans are doing their best to sniff one out.
