If you've been following Rebecca Yarros' journey from beloved romance author to Hollywood's most-wanted name, you already know things have been moving fast. But even by her standards, this one caught us off guard.
Apple TV has just acquired the rights to the Fourth Wing author's upcoming standalone romance novel Peculiar Stars, and the book doesn't even come out until Nov. 17, 2026!
Peculiar Stars follows Callista Moran, who has spent most of her life putting everyone else first. She's finally got her future figured out. She's engaged and things are settled until a routine sailing trip goes catastrophically wrong during a cyclone. She ends up stranded on a deserted island for 543 days. Not alone, though. With her fiance's cousin.
Yarros has described it as a "castaway romance," which is a genre combination we didn't know we needed. It's a slow-burn story about who we are when no one's watching and survival becomes the only thing that matters. According to Yarros herself, it will "wreck you in the best way" though she promises it's not a tearjerker, which feels important to flag given how her last few books went for us emotionally.
The official logline adds an interesting wrinkle: when Callista and her unlikely companion are finally rescued and re-enter their world of privilege, expectation, and secrets, the homecoming turns out to be more dangerous than the island they left behind. We love a good "the real world was the harder challenge all along" arc.
Why did Apple TV acquire the rights to Peculiar Stars?
Apple TV is mostly known for prestige dramas, sci-fi, and critically acclaimed limited series like Severance, Silo, Foundation, and Lessons in Chemistry. Romance has largely been someone else's lane.
So why Peculiar Stars? We'd argue it's pretty simple. Rebecca Yarros is one of the safest bets in entertainment right now. Her Empyrean series has sold over 30 million copies. Fourth Wing has an Amazon adaptation in the works. In the Likely Event is heading to Netflix. Variation is set up at Amazon as a feature. The Last Letter was sold to Amazon in 2025. Every book she has written, it seems, is either already on a screen or on its way there.
For Peculiar Stars, Yarros will serve as executive producer through her own production company, Full Measures Productions, which tracks since she's had a hands-on role across all her screen adaptations. A search is currently underway for a writer to adapt the novel, so we're still early in the process.
Apple is developing it as a TV series, which feels like the right call for the premise, really. A 543-day survival story has a lot of ground to cover, and a series format will give the slow burn the room it needs to breathe.
The book is available for pre-order now and releases this year on Nov. 17. We'll be watching both the shelves and the Apple TV announcements closely.
