One of the best Game of Thrones actors has joined 3 Body Problem season 2, and I'm so excited

3 Body Problem, Netflix’s epic sci-fi show based on the Remembrance of Earth's Past book series by Liu Cixin, is gearing up for its highly anticipated second season. The twisty series was created by Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff—along with Alexander Woo—in their first genre project together since their HBO smash hit. Needless to say, the pressure was certainly on to make this adaptation great.

Fortunately, the first season, released in March 2024, received generally positive reviews from critics and general audiences alike, and here at Winter is Coming, we very much enjoyed it. Now, Netflix has confirmed that production on season 2 has begun—but that’s not all.

As announced by Netflix today, Game of Thrones alum Alfie Allen has joined the cast of 3 Body Problem season 2 in a mystery role. That’s great news for fans of George R.R. Martin’s world, of course, as now the sophomore installment is basically just a big Thrones reunion—again.

Not only will Alfie reunite with Benioff and Weiss, but, as we previously reported, he’ll also be working with Game of Thrones director—and former House of the Dragon co-showrunner—Miguel Sapochnik, who has also joined the Netflix show to executive produce and helm “multiple episodes,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

And, actually, no, it does not end there, either! THR also reports that fellow Thrones director Jeremy Podeswa will also work on 3 Body Problem season 2.

Of course, Sapochnik is best known for directing some of the best Game of Thrones episodes, including my absolute favorite, “Battle of the Bastards,” for which he won an Emmy Award. Podeswa helmed other notable episodes, such as "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken," arguably the most controversial episode in the show’s history.

Both directors were nominated for multiple awards for their work on the fantasy series, marking a great sign for their time on 3 Body Problem.

Allen joins the already-established cast of 3 Body Problem, which includes—you guessed it—fellow Game of Thrones alum Liam Cunningham, who portrayed Davos Seaworth in the HBO show. Another alum, John Bradley, a.k.a. Samwell Tarly in Thrones, had a central role in the first season of the Netflix series, but he is not expected to return in season 2. And, finally, Conleth Hill, a.k.a. Varys in Thrones, had a guest role in season 1 of the Netflix show.

As for Allen’s time in Westeros, he memorably played Theon Greyjoy in all eight seasons of Game of Thrones, Robb Stark’s friend who turns into one of the main antagonists before redeeming himself at the end. His storyline is one of my favorites, but it’s really Allen’s acting that makes the character such a standout. He was nominated for an Emmy Award in 2019 for his performance, but he should’ve received more recognition.

Included in this recent news are casting announcements for actors David Yip and Jordan Sunshine, set to join the second season. Earlier this week, it was reported that Claudia Doumit and Ellie De Lange were also cast as series regulars, per Deadline.

While 3 Body Problem season 2 does not have a release date yet, the fact that they are now in production makes us hopeful we’ll hear more updates soon. As we previously reported, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos included the second installment in the expected lineup for the back-half of 2025 and 2026. At this point, we're predicting late 2026.

It’s been confirmed that 3 Body Problem will end with season 3.
