Jaqen H'ghar isn't the only man able to change faces. Kit Harington, better known for his role as Jon Snow in HBO's hit show Game of Thrones, has portrayed multiple different characters throughout his career, from bringing Jago to life in The Dreadful to voicing Eret in How to Train Your Dragon. However, there's one particular character in the actor's career whose time came to an end sooner than expected, and that is Dane Whitman.
Back in 2021, Eternals was released—a Marvel Cinematic Universe project that aimed to become an instrumental piece of the franchise but was ultimately forgotten. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige once mentioned that the Eternals pitch was the best he had ever heard, but critics and audiences alike didn't seem to agree with this idea. The film was released to commercial and critical disappointment, and the studio has since pretended it never existed.
Eternals was supposed to set up Kit Harington's character, Dane Whitman, as a major force to be reckoned with in the future, eventually adopting the Black Knight mantle. Unfortunately, five years have come and gone since the superhero's debut, and we have yet to see him again. But could he eventually return?
Kit Harington doesn't think we'll see Black Knight again in the MCU
During an interview with MovieWeb, Kit Harington was asked whether he would ever be open to returning to the MCU. While Harington revealed that he'd love the idea, he doesn't think there are any plans for Dane Whitman:
"I mean, I'd love to. I don't think there's any plan to. I hate to break it to you. But I think he's a wicked character. There's a part of him—that whole Ebony Blade stuff—where the more he kills, the worse he gets, the more addicted. He's such a great parable of addiction, and I think he's someone who starts good, goes bad. I think he's great, but we'll see. I don't know if there's any plan."
The MCU's ongoing Multiverse Saga has lacked clear direction for most of its run, introducing cosmic characters like the Eternals in the middle of a multiversal narrative while also attempting to expand its supernatural side by releasing solo projects for Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night. Unfortunately, none of these characters have been seen since their debuts, and the same can be said for She-Hulk, Mephisto, Kate Bishop, Hercules, and plenty more.
Now, Marvel Studios has set many storylines aside in favor of creating a rewarding end to the Multiverse Saga with the release of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Fortunately, it appears that once Doctor Doom's reign comes to an end, there will be enough breathing room for the studio to return to those seemingly abandoned projects.
It has been reported that Marvel is planning to make a live-action adaptation of the A.X.E.: Judgment Day comic book storyline, in which the Eternals play an instrumental role. Additionally, Oscar Isaac, who portrays Moon Knight, has opened up about how there have been discussions to create a Midnight Sons movie. Either of these projects would be perfect for Black Knight to make his long-awaited return.
The post-credits scene of Eternals seemed to indicate that Dane Whitman would potentially team up with Blade. Unfortunately, the Vampire Hunter's solo movie was never released, despite being announced in 2019. However, there have been rumors that a new iteration of Eric Brooks will appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, which would be the right move if a Midnight Sons crossover is really in the cards. If Blade returns, then it could be a sign that we haven't seen the last of Black Knight yet.
Of course, it's always important to take all reports and rumors with a grain of salt and not get our hopes too high. After all, based on Harington's words, it seems we won't see him again in the MCU. But if the beloved superhero franchise has taught us anything, it is that it loves to feature unexpected comebacks.
