George R.R. Martin and Game of Thrones showrunners reunite at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art grand opening

The doors have opened for George Lucas' new creative arts museum, and its big debut was one of the most star-studded affairs in recent memory. The opening ceremony for the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art took place on September 19, with creative titans flocking from near and far to attend the event in Los Angeles and check out this long-simmering project that Lucas and his wife, Mellody Hobson, have been working to bring to life for the last 17 years.

As Deadline put it in their excellent coverage of the event, "the opening night felt like the Sun Valley Conference, the Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys, the ESPYs and a political convention all rolled into one as CEOs, film and TV stars, marquee filmmakers and top California politicians all showed up for the occasion."

They aren't kidding either. From directors like Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg and Denis Villeneuve, to former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and current California governor Gavin Newsom, to Star Wars actors like Mark Hamill and Samuel L. Jackson and so many more, we could literally spend entire paragraphs just listing the names of all the impressive guests who were on hand — and still not get to them all.

For our purposes here at Winter Is Coming, however, we were obviously most excited to see A Song of Ice and Fire scribe George R.R. Martin in attendance. What's more, Martin and his minion Sid were caught in a candid photograph with none other than Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Check it out:

Is this a blurry photo? Sure. But it's still a photo of George R.R. Martin, David Benioff, and Dan Weiss together again, and I'm genuinely struggling to think of any other instance since the ending of Thrones and its subsequent award run for its final season where the three were caught on camera together. Combined with the Westeros celebrations at this year's Emmys — which were attended by both Martin and Benioff — it's starting to feel like a Game of Thrones reunion is afoot.

Benioff and Weiss weren't the only people Martin was photographed with, either. Check him out with his pals Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro:

I never really thought about it before, but if I had to pick three aged wise men to represent our modern age of fantasy, it would probably be these guys. Jackson's Lord of the Rings films redefined what the genre could look like at the cinema, just as Martin's own novels did for books and Game of Thrones did for television.

Guillermo del Toro, meanwhile, is one of the most creative minds in film at the moment; his name is basically synonymous with awe-inspiring movie experiences, typically with thought-provoking monsters in the mix. Martin even once highlighted del Toro as his ideal choice to direct an adaptation of his vampire novel Fevre Dream. I wonder if they chatted about the possibility at all while they were taking in the art of the Lucas Museum?

Whether Fevre Dream came up or not, the celebratory vibes of the event are plain to see from the many images of it that are now floating around online. I'm sure there were no shortage of fascinating conversations to be had between some of the greatest creative minds of our time. The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is now open to the public.
