Back on June 2, 2026, PlayStation held a State of Play presentation where it showcased the next installment in one of its most iconic, bloody, and violent video game franchises. God of War Laufey marks a new direction for a saga that has been in the making for over two decades. For the first time ever, Kratos will take a step back as his late wife, Faye, will be the one cracking skulls. Moreover, players will visit the Everywhen—the afterlife of the gods where deities from all mythologies gather and wreak a little havoc.
Initially, God of War Laufey was set to hit shelves on Feb. 16, 2027. However, Santa Monica Studio's upcoming project has now been delayed to May 20, 2027, and while it can be disappointing to learn that we'll have to wait three months longer to step into the shoes of Faye, the pushback also has its benefits.

God of War Laufey won't release in a crowded window anymore
Let's address the obvious: If a studio feels it needs more time to release a game, then by all means it should have it. We all know Cyberpunk 2077 is a masterpiece with tons of secrets, interesting storylines, and complex characters, but during its release, all everyone talked about was the numerous bugs and issues plaguing such a fantastic experience. Over time, CD Projekt Red managed to turn things around and win fans back. However, it would have been better if the team had left the game in the oven a little longer to begin with.
Delaying God of War Laufey ensures there will be fewer (if any) breaking bugs. This extra time also allows Santa Monica Studio to ensure its upcoming release is at the same level of quality as its two previous games, which were incredibly polished. Additionally, another added benefit is that God of War Laufey won't be released in a crowded window anymore (at least on paper).

The upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto VI on Nov. 19, 2026, has taken the video game industry by storm. Multiple developers have purposefully avoided releasing games in the months of November and December to avoid an uphill battle. No one, other than Nintendo, was willing to go toe-to-toe with what's shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of the year in the entertainment industry.
As a result, many games were scheduled to be released a few months before GTA VI, or a couple of months after. That's why September was filled with major releases such as The Blood of Dawnwalker, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Marvel’s Wolverine, Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, and more.
Incidentally, February 2027 is another month that is starting to become slightly crowded with major releases such as Metro 2039, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and Fable. The latter is a AAA fantasy action-adventure game much like God of War Laufey, so the two were bound to compete for players' attention and, more importantly, their time. Fortunately, that won't be the case anymore.
For the time being, there are no major releases scheduled for May 2027 other than God of War Laufey. Granted, that's likely to change in the upcoming months, especially when The Game Awards takes place in December. After all, multiple new titles are expected to be announced at the event. However, since Santa Monica Studio got to the May release window first, other studios will be the ones who will need to consider whether releasing in the same month as God of War Laufey is worth it, or if finding a different release date could be a better alternative.
The delay also gives Santa Monica Studio more time to promote God of War Laufey. After all, we only have the reveal gameplay footage to go by, and just a few days ago, the game was still slated to release in about three months. Now, PlayStation can drop a new trailer during the Game Awards and schedule a State of Play presentation for the first months of 2027, where we could get a new gameplay deep dive. That way, we can learn more about God of War Laufey as we get closer to its release.
In the meantime, there are plenty of other fantasy games to look forward to. And when God of War Laufey finally comes our way, it's likely to be a polished experience that shouldn't have any major bugs.
God of War Laufey will be released on May 20, 2027.
