If you’re a Harry Potter fan, this is the news you’ve been waiting for: three important characters have finally been cast in the upcoming HBO series.
Deadline reported that Jasper Talbot, Hannah Chinn, and Harry Gilby are set to play James Potter, Lily Potter, and Charlie Weasley, respectively, in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which premieres on HBO and HBO Max on Christmas Day.
This is, of course, major news for the series, for a few reasons. James and Lily are obviously Harry’s parents in the Harry Potter books. In the films, many fans felt they weren’t used as much as they should have been, given how integral they are to Harry’s story and character development. Hearing that they’ve been cast is honestly fantastic.
Charlie wasn’t even cast in the films, but he was a book character many readers wanted to see. This will be the first time we get to see him in live-action form.

How Lily and James might be involved
Throughout the Harry Potter books, there were several moments when Harry learned about his father's and mother's past. The series gave us few flashbacks overall. But we never really got to see their backstory or much about who they were as people — just that they sacrificed themselves to save their son.
They'll most likely be featured in the classic Mirror of Erised scene. As fans may recall, the mirror shows you what your heart desires most. It’s a tragic moment in the book when Harry sees his parents and believes they’re real, only to realize it’s all an illusion. Prepare to have your heart broken during that scene.
Because the new Harry Potter series has more time and aims to be a more accurate adaptation of the novels, we could explore much more of James and Lily, especially as the series progresses. Their history is talked about a lot by Sirius Black, who hasn’t been cast yet in the show. However, I could easily see them fitting into a story in the next season or so.

How Charlie Weasley will be involved
With Charlie Weasley, it’s much easier to trace where he'll be actively involved in the show. He could make his first appearance in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, when Ron contacts him in the first novel about Hagrid’s illegally hatched baby dragon. That’s because Charlie is actually a dragonologist. Talk about a cool job.
His friends come to pick up the dragon and take it to a sanctuary in Romania, but Charlie could be the one to do that this time. And since he was cast this early in the series, I have a feeling they might be changing that. If that’s the case, I am so here for that. Any way to include him more in this family and make him feel more real than just another Weasley is something I am always down for.
Regardless, Charlie has a bigger role in the later books, like Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. In the books, he first appears at the classic Quidditch World Cup scene, where he helps provide the dragons for the Triwizard Cup. He also joins the Order of the Phoenix in the fifth novel and helps bring in overseas reinforcements to fight the Dark Lord.
Charlie is also part of the final battle at Hogwarts, but we never saw him in the movies. We knew he was coming at some point.
When the Weasley kids were revealed, HBO teased in an Instagram post that Charlie was off in Romania (which was why his casting wasn’t announced yet). We just didn't know if the casting would be confirmed now or later in the life of the series. Now, we have nearly the whole Weasley set. We just need Bill to complete everything. All of these newly adapted Harry Potter characters are making me so happy.
With December not far away, this series feels more real every day, and it’s only a matter of time before we step back into the magic. I think I have to brush up on my dragon facts — or just reread the books.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres on HBO Max on Dec. 25, 2026.
