HBO confirms Game of Thrones movie in development, says George R.R. Martin involved

HBO is indeed working on a Game of Thrones movie idea, but keep in mind that there's a big difference between "we have something in early development" and "this is definitely happening."

A couple weeks back, The Hollywood Reporter leaked the info that Warner Bros. Discovery was working on a movie set in the world of Game of Thrones. The other day, HBO executive Casey Bloys confirmed that such a thing does indeed exist, although he cautioned that it's "very early in the process." Just because something is in early development doesn't mean it will ever actually make it to the screen; if HBO had their way, we probably wouldn't have heard about the movie at all unless and until it was ready to reveal.

"When we announce at HBO we're developing this story or that story, keep in mind it's developing," Bloys told a group of reporters, per Entertainment Weekly. "They'll develop an idea, we'll see if it's good. We'll read the scripts along with them. I think it could be fun and interesting. That's the point of development: you see, is there a story that's worthy of being in theaters and a big spectacle? I think it would be fun."

Who is "they"? There's no writer or director attached to the project yet, nor do we even know what the story might be about. However, according to Variety, Bloys said that George R.R. Martin, the author of the Song of Ice and Fire series, is involved. That's worth noting, because earlier this year Martin publicly criticized the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, opining that it had wandered too far afield of its source material — Martin's book Fire & Blood — in ways that were harming the show.

For Bloys' part, he likened working with Martin on these expansions of the Game of Thrones universe to being in a "rocky" marriage. "I would prefer everybody get along, of course. But with the creative process, we are always going to have bumps. That’s to be expected,” he said

We're keeping an eye on how the relationship between Martin and HBO is coming along; the third season of House of the Dragon is due out in 2026, and we'll see if the team decides to pivot back to something closer to Martin's original vision. In the meanwhile, a new Game of Thrones prequel show called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is coming out next year on HBO and Max.

Back to the Game of Thrones movie, we have no shortage of ideas for what it might be about; a movie about the Doom of Valyria sounds particularly interesting. And Martin himself recently suggested another possibility when he wrote about meeting up with Game of Thrones Maisie Williams (Arya Stark) to discuss some mystery project. Could an Arya Stark sequel movie be under discussion?

Anything's a possibility at this point. We'll watch and wait.
