Hideo Kojima is bringing his signature storytelling to the big screen. Following the recent announcement of Death Stranding 2 at The Game Awards, Kojima Productions has officially partnered with Hammerstone Studios to develop and produce a film adaptation of Death Stranding.
Per Deadline, Hammerstone, led by Alex Lebovici (Barbarian, Boy Kills World), will fully finance the film, with Kojima himself producing alongside Lebovici. Additional production support will come from Kojima Productions US, with Allan Ungar serving as an executive producer. While details on the plot remain under wraps, the film promises to expand on the Death Stranding universe, introducing new elements and characters rather than directly adapting the game’s storyline.
While video game adaptations have historically been hit-or-miss, Kojima and Lebovici are setting out to redefine the genre. Unlike the typical blockbuster-style adaptations, they promise something more intimate and grounded.
""This is a pivotal moment for the franchise, I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios.""Hideo Kojima

Lebovici echoed Kojima's enthusiasm, emphasizing the creative freedom behind the project. "Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be. This film will be an authentic 'Hideo Kojima' production."
Originally released in 2019 for PlayStation 4, Death Stranding became an instant cult classic, thanks to its unique gameplay and emotionally charged narrative. Featuring an all-star cast — including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, Léa Seydoux, Guillermo del Toro, and Margaret Qualley — the game follows Sam Bridges (Reedus) as he navigates a fractured, post-apocalyptic America, reconnecting humanity in the wake of the mysterious Death Stranding event. The game’s world is filled with spectral creatures, enigmatic characters, and Kojima’s signature cryptic storytelling, all of which could make for a visually stunning and deeply immersive film experience.
With Death Stranding 2 currently in development for PlayStation 5, Kojima is doubling down on expanding his universe across multiple mediums. His history of blending cinematic elements with video games makes this transition to film feel like a natural evolution.
Hammerstone Studios has been making waves in Hollywood with its commitment to unique and daring projects. With hits like Barbarian and Bill & Ted Face the Music, Lebovici's team has proven their ability to back bold creative visions. The studio’s latest productions — including Boy Kills World, Kung Fury the Movie, and Sympathy for the Devil — all point to a willingness to take risks and embrace unconventional storytelling.
While no director or writer has been officially announced for the Death Stranding adaptation, the project is reportedly on the fast track, with development already underway. Whether the film will retain the game’s original cast or introduce an entirely new lineup remains to be seen, but given Kojima's involvement, fans can rest assured that the adaptation will stay true to the Death Stranding spirit.
With Death Stranding’s hauntingly beautiful landscapes, intricate world-building, and existential themes, the film adaptation has the potential to be one of the most unique video game movies to date. Kojima’s vision has always defied convention, and now, with the backing of Hammerstone Studios, Death Stranding could become a cinematic experience unlike anything audiences have seen before.
