We’re less than a month away from the premiere of House of the Dragon season 3, and if quotes from the cast and crew are anything to go off of—and they should be—we’re in for a real exciting treat. Yes, we know the second season was met with criticism for its slow pacing and lack of action, but we do have reason to believe this next installment will absolutely kick ass. At least, that’s what the promo (and, of course, the source material) has promised us.
Ahead of the season 3 launch, Entertainment Weekly published its cover story on the cast today, this time only including Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen), Tom Glynn-Carney (Aegon Targaryen), and Ewan Mitchell (Aemond Targaryen), focusing on the three siblings fighting for power. In case you’re a little rusty on the lore, Aegon usurps the throne from his half-sister Rhaenyra in season 1 and she’s been trying to get it back ever since. Aemond is the wildcard here; having nearly killed his brother Aegon in season 2, he’s on a different side altogether, seeking power for himself.
Along with awesome shots of the three actors, EW also shared exclusive new looks at the third season, including photos of the highly anticipated Battle of the Gullet. Check them out:
It’s an all-out war in season 3

Corlys Velaryon will be leading his fleet as House of the Dragon season 3 opens up, defending the blockade that’s about to be under attack. This highly anticipated battle is going to be a defining moment in the season, as one of the deadliest naval battles in Westeros history.
Toussaint, who plays Corlys, previously teased the episode, getting fans excited for what’s to come. "Not to give any spoilers, but I've spoken to Loni Peristere, one of our directors, and he said, 'What we're doing in this particular episode, we don't think it's ever been done on television before,'" the actor told Gold Derby.

The Battle of the Gullet will also see Abigail Thorn reprise her role as Sharako Lohar, the Lyseni ship commander who allies with Team Green to attack Corlys’s fleet. This is the first official photo we’ve seen of the character in the third season, and Sharako definitely looks out for blood.

Up next, we got a new shot of Abubakar Salim as Alyn of Hull, another key player in the Battle of the Gullet. Appearing to be yelling out an order on the ship, we can expect this character to take a bigger focus in the third season. Salim has spoken about season 3 many times on his social media accounts, most recently tweeting of the Battle of the Gullet: “Again, this battle was an absolute mad one to film. The training done for it all and the choreography was intense. It’s going to be huge.”

Last but not least, Entertainment Weekly shared this behind-the-scenes photo of actor Harry Collett, who portrays Jacaerys Targaryen. It’s always awesome to see BTS pics like this one, showing us a moment that’s going to be undoubtedly epic. It’s wild seeing how the actors perform under such different circumstances than what we see in the final version.
Jace is going to be another big part of the Battle of the Gullet, but we won’t say anymore just in case you haven’t read the book, George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. We can assure you, though, that there will be a whole lot of action, bloodshed, and tears by the time the battle is over.
While the actual battle itself is captivating, the aftermath is nearly just as intense. Things will never be the same for all parties involved after this, and it serves as the most upsetting part of Fire & Blood for me.
There’s a whole lot riding on House of the Dragon season 3 to deliver, and if the Battle of the Gullet is anywhere near as epic as showrunner Ryan Condal says it is, then we’ve got nothing to worry about. Tune in for the season 3 premiere on Sunday, June 21, on HBO and HBO Max.
