We’re inching closer to the conclusion of House of the Dragon season 3, but there’s still a whole lot of action and excitement to get through before it wraps up. While the second season was criticized for slower pacing and a uneventful finale, this installment has been full speed ahead since the highly anticipated Battle of the Gullet in the premiere. That’s no exception in tonight’s episode, which sees the return of a key player in the Dance of the Dragons—no, we’re not talking about Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell).
Yes, Aemond does return after a two-episode hiatus in the latest episode, but you didn’t actually think he was dead, did you? No, we’re talking another member of Team Green, who seemingly lost his life during the naval battle in episode 1.
Tyland Lannister returns in House of the Dragon season 3 episode 5
Good ole Tyland Lannister reappears in season 3 episode 5, and it looks like his return will spell great news for Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney)—if Larys Strong (Matthew Needham) allows it, however.
In the Larygon adventures subplot, the two men bicker about their next move while taking shelter in Rook’s Rest. It’s not an ideal situation, especially not for spoiled Aegon, but as Larys reminds him, they don’t have many options. Larys wants them to start a new life in Essos while waiting out the war, but Aegon wants to find his brother Aemond to kill him.
In Rook’s Rest, Aegon and Larys are surprised to see a hooded man approach them, only for it to be revealed as Tyland. A strong follower of Aegon, Tyland is happy to help the two men, but his plan doesn’t sit well with Larys. Though Tyland proposes they travel to Lannisport to seek shelter and help from green supporters, Larys senses a potential ulterior motive, seeing as Lannisport is located right outside of Castlery Rock, the seat of House Lannister.
What happens to Tyland in Fire & Blood
Tyland’s return in House of the Dragon season 3 is certainly a relief for fans of Fire & Blood, as we know he still has important things to do in the story. This is where we’ll get into some of those plot points from the book, so take this as your SPOILER WARNING for Fire & Blood.
In Fire & Blood, Tyland is not involved in the Battle of the Gullet at all, actually. It’s Otto Hightower who plans that partnership with the Triarchy, while Tyland is still in King’s Landing. After Rhaenyra takes the city, Tyland is placed in the dungeons and tortured for not revealing where the castle’s coin is. Tyland is later released, and while under the rule of Aegon, who becomes the king again, he travels to find sellswords to fight for his cause. Eventually, after the Targaryen civil war ends, Tyland becomes Hand to the King while Aegon III sits the Iron Throne.
We’re not sure how much House of the Dragon will cover after the war ends, but we know Tyland will remain a prominent person during this part of Westeros history.
Last we see of Tyland before tonight’s episode, he’s getting thrown off the Bitchfist by Sharako Lohar (Abigail Thorn) during the Battle of the Gullet in season 3 episode 1. Though we don’t see the body, he’s wearing very heavy armor, so it’s suggested he drowns. Thankfully, that isn’t the case!
Now, of course, Tyland’s return is a game-changer for Aegon’s campaign. The men just have to decide what their immediate next step is—and fast.
While Larys and Tyland are debating what to do in the latest episode, Aegon gets himself into trouble when Janos (Oliver Coopersmith) discovers his crown in his bag. This leads to Aegon swiftly stabbing him repeatedly, killing him. That means no matter where their journey takes the trio next, they’ll have to be be on their way very soon.
