Season 3 of House of the Dragon is over. The finale dropped last weekend, wrapping up a phenomenal, roller-coaster of a season where the stakes have never felt higher. Tumbleton burned. Helaena Targaryen is gone. And Rhaenyra is sitting on the Iron Throne while half of Westeros has started to wonder if Aegon II is actually the rightful king. It was a lot.
Now, while we brace for the two-year wait until season 4, there is some good news. The physical release is coming this winter and it is pretty packed. We are talking additional footage, extended behind-the-scenes content and extras that might make rewatching feel like a new experience.
Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced House of the Dragon: The Complete Third Season just one day after the finale aired on August 9 and the package they have put together makes a strong case for owning this one on disc.
What's coming and when
The digital version of the season is of course already available right now. You can buy or rent it today. For the physical editions, mark your calendar for December 1, 2026 (and if you're in the UK, November 30, because apparently the UK gets to suffer less). The formats coming are:
- 4K UHD Steelbook
- 4K UHD
- Blu-ray
- DVD
Preorders are already live. If you want the Steelbook before it disappears from shelves, grab it early. Based on how fast the season 2 steelbook moved, those might not be up for long.

What's actually in the House of the Dragon: The Complete Third Season box
All eight episodes, obviously. But the more interesting stuff is the bonus content, and there's quite a bit of it.
Extended The House That Dragons Built episodes
This is the one I'm personally most excited about. The House That Dragons Built is HBO's behind-the-scenes companion series, with one episode for each episode of season 3. On HBO Max, these run at around 20 minutes each. The physical release gets you exclusive extended versions of all eight of them with additional footage that didn't make the streaming cut.
Each one goes behind the scenes of a specific episode, and given how technically ambitious season 3 was (including the Battle of Tumbleton), there's going to be a lot worth seeing here.
"Inside the Episode" featurettes
One for every single episode. These are shorter pieces where the writers and directors walk us through the choices they made, what they were going for, what certain moments mean. If you're the kind of fan like us who immediately goes hunting for breakdowns and explainers after watching, these are basically that, but official with actual access to the people who made the show.
Cast, director and producer featurettes
It will also have interviews and discussions with the people behind season 3. This season involved a lot of heavy creative decisions including Rhaenyra's turn, the big battle sequences, Helaena's arc and more. Hearing the cast and creators actually talk through all of it is going to be worthwhile for fans. Emma D'Arcy has already been speaking publicly about what the finale means for Rhaenyra's trajectory, and more of that kind of insight is what these featurettes tend to deliver.
The UK Steelbook extras
For fans picking up the UK edition, there will also be physical in-pack items including an episode guide and character cards with an envelope. Cool, right?
The George R.R. Martin situation (Yes, we have to talk about it)
One of the things that hangs over the show in general is that Martin has been publicly critical of the direction Condal's team has taken, particularly regarding changes from Fire & Blood, the source material. He's spoken about what he called "toxic butterflies" as small changes that ripple outward and alter the story in significant ways.
The relationship between Martin and the production has been tense and the season 3 finale may have even attempted to smooth things over. That said, season 3 still attracted enormous viewership and the show has already been renewed through its fourth and final season, expected in 2028.
Whether you side with book purists or think the show works on its own terms, the Blu-ray extras may actually shed some light on the creative decisions that sparked all of this.
It's also worth noting that in the wider Westeros world, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set for its second season in 2027. So there's at least one more live-action return to that world before House of the Dragon comes back for its final chapter.
