House of the Dragon season 3 is off to a strong start, with the much-anticipated Battle of the Gullet proving every bit as massive and thrilling as promised. The creators, cast, and crew teased the big battle sequence in the lead-up to its premiere, and all the effort poured into it paid off. It removes a major character from the Dance of the Dragons and leaves others hanging in the balance, all but guaranteeing viewers will be eager to dig into season 3 episode 2.

The events of the premiere promise to escalate the conflict between the Blacks and the Greens, despite the tentative truce Alicent and Rhaenyra attempt to strike in season 2's finale. It's only going to get wilder from here, so House of the Dragon fans had better mentally prepare. But when does the next episode of the Game of Thrones spinoff arrive on HBO and HBO Max? We break down how to watch and what you can expect below.

  1. What time is season 3 episode 2 out?
  2. How long is season 3 episode 2?
  3. Sign up for HBO Max
  4. What happened in the premiere and what to expect from episode 2

What time is season 3 episode 2 out?

New episodes of House of the Dragon season 3 follow the same release schedule as the two prior seasons of the show and Game of Thrones before it. One new episode comes out every Sunday, airing on HBO at 9:00 p.m. ET. This will continue until all eight installments are released, with House of the Dragon season 3's finale slated for Sunday, August 9.

Anyone watching the new episodes via the actual HBO channel will need to be ready at 9:00 p.m. ET sharp — though according to the network's schedule, episode 2 will air again at 10:08 p.m. ET and once more at 11:56 p.m. ET.

Alternatively, those with HBO Max can watch House of the Dragon's latest chapter on the streaming service. It's available there starting at 9:00 p.m. ET as well, and watching it on HBO Max enables viewers to rewind, pause, and fast-forward. These are all features that will come in handy while trying to keep up with the intricacies of the Targaryen civil war.

How long is season 3 episode 2?

While House of the Dragon season 3 kicked off with a huge 72-minute battle episode, this week's installment will be a few minutes shorter. Per Collider, the second episode clocks in at 68 minutes including the credits. It's still a lengthy one, but perhaps that's to be expected given how much of the Dance of the Dragons the show still needs to cover.

Season 3's opener spends much of its runtime on action, but we can probably expect the emotional fallout of the Battle of the Gullet to take precedence this week. That said, there's ongoing fighting in the Riverlands, and Rhaenyra's bound to want retribution...so, we can't count out more action sequences either.

What happened in the premiere and what to expect from episode 2

House of the Dragon season 3's premiere is a game-changer for the Blacks and the Greens, and the fallout in episode 2 will undoubtedly be huge. The death of Prince Jacaerys Velaryon will obviously be front and center in this week's installment, but there are other major developments that happened in episode 1, including:

  • Lord Larys Strong giving Aegon II up to Black soldiers (to what end, we don’t know)
  • Team Black gaining ground in the Riverlands
  • The Winter Wolves arriving (and killing Jason Lannister)
  • Rhaena bonding with Sheepstealer
  • Lord Ormund Hightower's introduction
  • Alicent attempting to send Aemond to Harrenhal
  • The Triarchy being defeated and Sharako Lohar being killed
  • Corlys Velaryon's fate hanging in the balance after the Battle of the Gullet

Season 3's "weeks ahead" trailer teases the remainder of this outing, and several of the clips featured are almost certainly from episode 2. That includes the shots of Baela and Rhaena looking stricken after the battle, as well as Rhaenyra asking about Jace. She repeats "What have you done?" several times, too, likely in reference to Jace, Baela, and Rhaena's involvement. There's also a shot of Rhaenyra grieving while Daemon asks if she'll let him "die in vain."

Clearly, House of the Dragon season 3 episode 2 is going to be a painful one. Yet when the dust settles, it'll see Rhaenyra and Daemon becoming even more ruthless in their campaign. There's a lot to look forward to, so fans won't want to miss House of the Dragon this Sunday...or any other Sunday, for that matter.
