It’s another eventful week in Westeros, with House of the Dragon season 3 episode 6 dropping on HBO and HBO Max this evening. Tensions are high in every location we’re getting to see, with Rhaenyra Targayren (Emma D’Arcy) plotting a new scheme for her frenemy and prisoner, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), and Ormund Hightower (James Norton) steadfast in his campaign to put Daeron Targaryen (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) on the throne.
The latest episode of House of the Dragon begins on a high note as the highly-anticipated Butcher’s Ball plays out, seeing Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) finally meet his end. But we’ve still got at least one more battle on the way, and the trailer for season 3 episode 7 teases just that (and a lot more):
Conflicts will escalate in next week’s episode, and not just in Tumbleton. As we know, Rhaenyra has sent Alicent off to Harrenhal, and the preview gives us more of a glimpse of that than I was anticipating. We see Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) reunite with his mother, but Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin) is in his ear trying to turn him against Alicent. Awkward!
We also see Rhaenyra interact with Helaena (Phia Saban), with Rhaenya reminding Helaena that not only are they sisters, but as Rhaenyra is the queen, Helaena has to listen to her. I love these two characters so much, so I’m eager to see how their dynamic evolves, if at all.
Ormund now has the upperhand, and he seems very cocky in the trailer. We’ll see how much longer that’ll last.
We have a feeling there won’t be any dull moments in the final two episodes of House of the Dragon season 3. Not only is Alicent off to Harrenhal to try to lure Aemond Targaryen out (or kill him), but Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) has been captured by Ormund’s army. We’re inching closer to the battle(s) of Tumbleton, but we’ll have to wait to see how the show adapts these Fire & Blood events. With the penultimate episode releasing next week, the clock is ticking to wrap the installment up in a satisfying way.
Elsewhere in Westeros this week, Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), Larys Strong (Matthew Needham), and Tyland Lannister (Jefferson Hall) must flee Rook’s Rest after Aegon commits murder, and Aemond strikes up a romance with Alys. Not just that, but Alys has presented Aemond with multiple dragon eggs — which begs many questions from fans — as a way to persuade him to start a life with her there.
We know Aemond is power hungry, but will Alys be able to move his sights from the Iron Throne to something else entirely? It’s possible, though with Alicent on her way to Harrenhal, it might not come to fruition.
Meanwhile, Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox) arrives in Tumbleton to reunite with Ormund and Daeron, with plans to return to Oldtown. It’s evident that Gwayne and Daeron have a close relationship, and Daeron understandably doesn’t want his uncle to leave him alone with Ormund again.
Tonight’s episode also gives us more from the dragonseeds, particularly Ulf (Tom Bennett) and Hugh (Kieran Bew), setting up a plot point from the book we’re eager to see play out. Clearly, they’re fed up with their circumstances, and after Hugh reunites with his wife Kat (Ellora Torchia), he might have to change his plans.
