We’ve nearly reached the finish line on House of the Dragon season 3. After a mildly disappointing second installment, the current season has been full of high-octane moments, starting with the epic Battle of the Gullet in the premiere. From bloodshed and major deaths to new eccentric characters like Ormund Hightower (James Norton), there’s been no shortage of excitement this time around. But all good things must come to an end, and next week marks the season finale.
Tonight’s penultimate episode is highly entertaining, introducing new threads and closing others. Rhaenyra Targayren (Emma D’Arcy) is still steadfast in her right to rule, but she has three other huge threats now, in the form of her half-siblings: Daeron Targaryen (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth), who Ormund is determined to put on the Throne, Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell), who plans to rule his own kingdom at Harrenhal with Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), and Aegon Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), whose dragon Sunfyre has just come back from the dead.

Looks like word has gotten out about Aegon’s return! The season 3 finale trailer opens up with Addam of Hull (Clinton Liberty) talking to his brother Alyn of Hull (Abubakar Salim), informing him that Rhaenyra is now on a “dark path” because of the news. This narration carries over to a clip of Rhaenyra holding Baela Targaryen’s (Bethany Antonia) face a bit aggressively, but there’s no way we can believe she’d hurt her stepdaughter.
Meanwhile, Daemon reunites with the Riverlands army, including Roddy the Ruin (Tommy Flanagan) and Oscar Tully (Archie Barnes), who are ready to take on the Hightower army at Tumbleton. Speaking of Tumbleton, Daeron informs his uncle Gwayne Hightower (Freddie Fox) that Ormund has a plan up his sleeve he’s not even telling him. Could this have to do with the dragonseeds, perhaps?
The trailer also includes a couple of shots at Aemond in Harrenhal, proving (what we expected) he survives the poison.
Though the Battle of the Gullet in the season 3 premiere might be the biggest battle of the season in terms of scale and production level, the First Battle of Tumbleton should be the most important. It involves more key players and leads to irreversible damage, including the forthcoming Second Battle of Tumbleton, which we’re expecting in the fourth season. At this time, we’re just speculating what’ll happen in season 4, as the adaptation has taken plenty of creative liberties so anything can happen.
The most recent episode of House of the Dragon season 3 leaves us with multiple cliffhangers. Over at Harrenhal, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) seemingly carries out her order from Rhaenyra when poisoning her son Aemond. He collapses at Alys’ feet (am I having déjà vu?) as Alicent flees the castle, but he’s going out that easily.
We know Alys has some sort of powers, and she even calls herself a witch, so we’re assuming she’ll be able to save his life again. Alicent will likely go back to King’s Landing and tell Rhaenyra that Aemond is dead, only for him to return in (hopefully) epic fashion. That might not happen until season 4, though. There’s a lot the finale has to get through!
Though Rhaenyra sits the Iron Throne, she’s now the most vulnerable she’s been all season. Not only will she (likely) believe Aemond is dead, but she’s in conflict with her husband Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), her Hand Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint) is being held prisoner by Ormund (and she doesn’t know it yet), and one of her dragonseeds, Ulf (Tom Bennett), is about to turn on her.
Rhaenyra is about to lose at least one dragonrider, Aegon has just reunited with his dragon, and Aemond could be next. Without realizing any of this, danger is inevitable for our queen.
We absolutely cannot wait to see what happens in the House of the Dragon season 3 finale, and we are crossing our fingers that they stick the landing.
