It’s official: AMC’s Interview With the Vampire season 4 is coming and it will be titled Anne Rice’s Queen of the Damned!
Today, less than one week after the final episode of season 3, part of the show’s cast and creators announced the renewal during their panel for The Vampire Lestat at San Diego Comic-Con.
Season 4 will be largely based on Anne Rice’s third novel in The Vampire Chronicles, titled The Queen of the Damned, published in 1988. (Yes, if you're thinking about the 2002 film starring the late Aaliyah, that's the book's first adaptation.) The story will follow the main characters from previous seasons and the eponymous mother of all vampires, Akasha, played masterfully by Sheila Atim, who was introduced to the show in episode 5 of season 3.
The title change may be unusual for most shows, but not for this series, whose seasons 1-2 were known as Anne Rice’s Interview With the Vampire, and season 3 as Anne Rice’s The Vampire Lestat, after book 2. Yet another title change to follow the path of the books is only natural at this point.
Another important shift will occur behind the scenes: Rolin Jones, who served as showrunner for seasons 1-3, is stepping down from his role to leave the helm to Hannah Moscovitch, who has so far served as a writer and executive producer. Jones and Mark Johnson will stay as EP. This season, Moscovitch wrote the characters of Akasha and Gabriella. She is also the writer for episodes 1.03 (co-written with Jones), 1.05, 2.01, 2.05 (co-written with Jonathan Ceniceroz), 2.06 (co-written with Shane Munson), 3.01 (co-written with Jones), 3.05 (co-written with series composer Daniel Hart), and 3.07.

“You. You who have called to me, not knowing my name. You, with your dresses stained, your faces down in the mud. I have heard you and I say this to you now: do not let them shake you into the size of their cage. Women, get up. Out of the ditches where they have thrown you and come with me now to where the men are gathered, and do what you have long longed to do. Kill them all. I am the answer!”
The teaser revolves entirely around Akasha calling on women everywhere in the world, inciting their rage, essentially inviting them to join her genocide. After watching women being oppressed at the hand of men for a few millennia, Akasha rises from her statuesque, comatose, existence, awakened by Lestat’s music and plans to eliminate 90% of the world’s men.
The tagline for season 4, as seen on the official poster, is “She is the answer.” In episode 5 of The Vampire Lestat, Sheila Atim’s Akasha delivered a powerful monologue about Akasha’s condition as a universal allegory for womanhood. At the end of it, as Lestat was kicked out of his position as her Keeper, Akasha yelled the omen, “I am the question, I am the answer!”

What is Queen of the Damned about?
Queen of the Damned will be be part 2 of The Vampire Lestat, which ended on a bit of a cliffhanger: in the show’s present (set in 2025), after reconciling with Louis de Pointe du Lac (Jacob Anderson) and having his head re-attached, Lestat de Lioncourt (Sam Reid) is reluctantly about to take the stage in Montreal for a massive concert organized by Gabriella (Jennifer Ehle) where thousands of vampires have gathered, despite what Armand (Assad Zaman) and Daniel Molloy (Eric Bogosian).
In the future, during Lestat’s later narration of events, the city has been destroyed, presumably by Akasha, a fact that Lestat takes full responsibility for.
The opening scene of The Vampire Lestat was set in an even later future, a couple of years after Lestat’s narration, at an auction for Lestat’s recording. Louis, Armand, and the Talamasca’s Raglan James (Justin Kirk) were present in the scene.
This season, we will delve deep in the origin of vampires in Anne Rice’s world. The queen of the damned represents the primordial female archetype, found in many mythologies, that is both the mother and the destroyer.

At SDCC, Atim spoke about her excitement to bring Akasha to life in episode 5 of The Vampire Lestat. She mentioned that they shot Akasha’s scene toward the end of the shoot and therefore had only a day to film it. Atim quickly learned Akasha’s four-page monologue — and, since she would be playing it on a table, rehearsed it on her bed in the position she would shoot it.
“The speech in the script is four pages long and has no full stops,” Atim revealed. “It was really about trying to chart the journey through the questions that Akasha’s asking and giving them real meaning, making them feel very present and alive.”
Shooting the entire sequence took only two takes. Atim also praised the team effort behind Akasha’s arrival: Moscovitch’s writing, the hair and make-up teams, the set. “That moment was really the culmination of all that brilliant work.”
Other highlights from SDCC included Jacob Anderson praising his co-star Sam Reid, who was absent from the panel this year due to scheduling conflicts, as he is currently starring on stage in Doubt: A Parable in Sydney. Anderson said the moments he feels most comfortable while shooting are the ones in which he and Reid are screaming at each other. “We should cheer for Sam Reid. It’s really weird, him not being here,” he added. “We love you, Sam!”
Assad Zaman (Armand) and Eric Bogosian (Daniel Molloy) talked about how they never rehearse even the most intense scenes with each other before they film. Both will return next season, and there may be some more romance between them coming on our screens.
Production for Queen of the Damned has not officially started, so we do not have an official release window at present. Hopefully, season 4 will come out in a year and a half, but there was a two-year hiatus between season 2 and 3. We will be reporting news about production and any teasers that are released along the way.
Just like its predecessor Interview With the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat is one of the most critically acclaimed shows of the year. We have no doubt that Queen of the Damned will be no less spectacular.
