Thanks to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Oscar, Emmy and Tony Award-winning actor Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of the Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill.
While no named role as been confirmed, the esteemed actor has joined the cast as a secondary villain. He plays the leader of a secret order called The Watchers, tasked with keeping an eye over immortals.
Back in 1986, director Russell Mulcahy introduced the world to Highlander. The movie follows Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), a medieval Scottish swordsman who suddenly learns that he's immortal. Before long, he's thrust into a battle against other immortal beings who are determined to destroy the Earth.
The new Highlander project is still quite early in its development. It has been delayed slightly after Cavill suffered an injury during pre-production. Now, production is slated to begin in early 2026. No release date has been set yet, but we can expect it to land in theaters either late 2027 or early 2028. Are you excited to see Highlander back on our screens?
Despite being a certified box office failure, -- taking around $13 million worldwide from a $19 million budget -- the original Highlander movie is considered a cult classic. It didn't quite reach the heights of other sci-fi and fantasy movies from the period (it was a golden age for genre movies, after all), but through word of mouth and home video release, the movie has garnered a pretty large fanbase. It even got a sequel, Highlander II: The Quickening, a threequel, Highlander III: The Sorcerer, and even a fourth movie as recent as the year 2000. Outside of movies, the franchise also expanded into a successful TV show throughout the 1990s, which ran for over 100 episodes.
The original Highlander franchise would ultimately fizzle away. But it's officially coming back with a complete reboot from Amazon MGM. The upcoming remake of the original movie is being ushered in by director Chad Stahelski from a script by Michael Finch. It has enlisted Henry Cavill (Superman, The Witcher) to be the face of the franchise as Connor MacLeod.
And when we talk about a stacked cast, we're not joking. The project has attracted some of the most esteemed talent in the industry. Outside of Cavill, other cast members include Russell Crowe, Marisa Abela, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan and Djimon Hounsou. These actors need no introduction.
