While Game of Thrones ended seven years ago, there’s hope that a certain Northern warrior could potentially come back someday—at least, according to Kit Harington.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Harington was asked if he would ever return to the world of Westeros, since a spinoff series was confirmed many years ago for his character, Jon Snow, before it went on the shelf. Harington said he believes it could happen, but it has to be when the time and story are right:
“We developed it two years or so. I still think there’s a world in which something could work. I wouldn’t have gone into it in the first place if I didn’t. But I was very insistent at the start — as was HBO and George R.R. Martin — of like: ‘If we don’t find the right thing, let’s not do it. It’s much better if we don’t.’ After a little while of thinking about it — it kind of was me — [I said], ‘This isn’t quite the right [story].' [But] now I’ve gone and done all these other things and now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world again and where it sits in my life.”

For those who need a refresher, there was a Jon Snow spinoff that was in development, but after some time, it was shelved, to the point where Harington said in June 2025 that there was “no plan” to continue the story.
As a fan of the series, I must say it felt like the right decision at the time. We were right in the middle of House of the Dragon becoming a major HBO series, and there were so many spinoffs in the world of Westeros that it felt like we were getting a new one every week.
Now, a year later, House of the Dragon has just finished its third season with plenty of crazy moments, and fewer spinoffs are actively in the works.
The big one everyone has been talking about is the announced movie about Aegon’s Conquest. And then there is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which was a huge hit. People can’t wait for the anticipated season 2 and many fans want to see the next adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg. We keep going back, but it would be nice to start looking ahead to the future again.
Why a Jon Snow spinoff could still work
A Jon Snow spinoff wouldn’t be unwelcome once House of the Dragon is finished. And since season 4 will be its last season, maybe that's the next big move. Instead of going back in time, they could go forward. Harington has said in several interviews that this isn’t just a “him” thing, even though he initially had the idea. He and George R.R. Martin have worked together on the story, but it was never the right one.
Martin has said Jon Snow is the one character he’d be open to exploring in a post-A Song of Ice and Fire world, as reported in a The Hollywood Reporter article. His fate was decided. He was sent beyond the Wall, exiled for killing Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), and now lives with the Wildlings.
But it turns out the sequel they previously worked on featured a more “broken” Jon Snow, and HBO thought fans might not enjoy that, so they set the idea aside. For a time, it felt like Harington wanted to step away from fantasy altogether, but these recent comments suggest otherwise and that it could potentially happen at some point.
And it’s not like Harington has leaned too far away. He’s done plenty, but his next biggest role is arguably in the next biggest fantasy franchise of all time—the new Harry Potter series. He’ll portray Gilderoy Lockhart, a role that has real meaning to him. And that show also happens to be on HBO.
What that means for his character's future, we don’t really know. We still don’t even know Jon’s fate in the books, since everything has been up in the air about when Martin will finish them. For now, I think we need to be content that he made it to the end of the original series and hope that maybe one day there might be a continuation.
Until then, we can think that Jon will live out his days with the wildlings and Ghost. That’s the ending I’m choosing to believe until we’re told otherwise.
