Like the rest of us, Diego Luna is "sad" that Star Wars: Andor is ending this year

This year, Star Wars: Andor will have a chance to cement its legacy as the best Star Wars show yet produced.

Star Wars TV shows have been up, down and all around over the past several years; you've had big hits like The Mandalorian, sleepy failures like The Acolyte, and everything in between. There are so many Star Wars shows out that a new one feels less like an event and more like déjà vu.

That said, at least one show has managed to stand out: Andor, a prequel to the movie Rogue One, follows the journey of Cassian Andor (Deigo Luna) as he transforms from an isolated scavenger into a committed freedom fighter for the Rebel Alliance, which is in the thick of fighting the Empire. You might not think that a prequel to a Star Wars spinoff movie would be what the franchise needed, but Andor impressed everyone when it premiered in 2022. The show is tightly written, well-acted and surprisingly mature for a franchise usually aimed at kids and teens. Andor proved that Star Wars can have range!

The show returns for its second and final season this year, and Diego Luna channeled the feelings of many fans when he talked about it on the red carpet at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards this past weekend. “I can tell you, I’m sad,” he told Deadline. “Because it’s the last season! It’s the end.”

Andor creator Tony Gilroy originally pitched Disney on a five-season show, but that plan got whittled down in production when it became clear that it was too ambitious. The two seasons alone cost well over half a billion dollars, so maybe it's unrealistic to hope Disney would have sprung for more. Then again, given how terrific the show is, perhaps it would have been worth it.

“I’m excited for audiences to watch, it’s been a long journey. it’s cool,” Luna added. Having watched the first season, I have no doubt the second will be very compelling. Like the first, it will have 12 episodes, divided into three-episodes blocks which each tell a more-or-less self-contained story arc. The second season will end right before Rogue One begins.

Andor season 2 will kick off on April 22, 2025. It's just one of several great shows coming our way in 2025:
