In just over a week, Prime Video will premiere the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, its flagship epic fantasy series based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Season 3 marks a bold new chapter for the series which leaps ahead 5 years from the end of season 2, when Sauron's war against the Elves of Middle-earth is in full swing and he's deep into his quest to forge the One Ring.
Getting acclimated to the new time jump might take viewers a moment, but fortunately we'll have plenty to sink into on the show's November 11 premiere date. Prime Video is going with a fairly unusual release schedule for The Rings of Power season 3. Its first four episodes — that's half the season — drop on Wednesday, November 11; episodes 4 and 5 will follow on November 18; and the final two episodes of season 3 debut November 25.
In a recent interview, The Rings of Power co-showrunner Patrick McKay discussed the new release schedule, and surprisingly, it sounds like this move was done more for artistic reasons than strictly business ones.
“We’re always in conversation with Amazon, and we’re advocating for what we think is best for the show,” Patrick McKay told io9 at a press day for The Rings of Power season 3.
“We generally, as the creators, feel that the show plays better on a binge because it really is so highly serialized and there are so many storylines. It’s the kind of show, just as viewers, that we find that you really have to pay attention to and you want to get that feeling you get when you’re hooked on a show where it sweeps you away,” he continued. “And we find when you watch it, boom, boom, boom, boom, it sort of works better. So we’re always advocating for more episodes sooner, and then this particular season, we really wanted it to be out by the holidays. We wanted people to be able to binge it over the holidays. So it’ll be a quick release, but then you can watch it at your leisure.”

The Rings of Power season 3 release schedule is all about that binge
When I first heard the news that Prime Video was releasing all eight episodes of The Rings of Power over the course of three weeks, my gut reaction was that this was a move meant to drive up Amazon Prime subscriptions. Episodes 7 and 8 of the season premiere the week of Thanksgiving in the U.S., just before Black Friday and Cyber Monday — two days that are obviously very important to Amazon's broader business. Prime Video is also dropping the entirety of its new Blade Runner 2099 limited series on November 25, making it the most important day of the entire year for the streamer in terms of its sci-fi and fantasy releases.
All that seemed to me to indicate that Amazon really wanted to capture as many people as possible for Prime memberships ahead of the holiday rush, which would make sense, since sign ups are presumably an important metric overall for the streamer's series because of how they can lead people into the wider Amazon ecosystem. It's a situation that is somewhat unique to Amazon, as a vast general goods retailer which also specializes in certain entertainment niches, like books and its streaming service.
However, McKay paints the choice as something he and his fellow showrunner J.D. Payne fought for, in order to give viewers the best binge-watch experience possible over the holidays. That makes this decision feel much better to me as a viewer. I'm curious to see what those first four episodes feel like, and whether that half-season on-ramp to this latest outing for the show ends up feeling almost like its own epic four-hour film that lays the stage for an even better final two weeks, or if it the episodes would have benefited from more breathing room.
It won't be long until we can watch and decide for ourselves how well this strategy works for the show's story. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3 debuts its first four episodes on Prime Video on November 11.
