Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender gets the season 3 update fans have been waiting for

Be prepared to face the Fire Nation, Avatar fans, as we finally got an update on Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3.

Netflix's Tudum confirmed today that the third (and final) season of the live-action adaptation will release sometime in 2027. The entire third season has actually been shot already, so we won’t be waiting years for updates on when we can expect to see a teaser or a trailer. It seems we’ll reach this conclusion much more easily than we originally thought.

The official X page also posted a first look, featuring Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, looking ready to take someone down. Check it out below:

If you know the animated series, this could be the moment when Zuko (Dallas Liu) turns on his father and faces him down to escape. But since the show has taken some creative liberties with the plot, who really knows where it’s going?

Despite that, this means that Avatar: The Last Airbender is coming next year—but it also gives us plenty of time to theorize.

What might happen in Avatar season 3?

If you don’t remember the ending of season 2, it showed Aang (Gordon Cormier) suffering from a critical strike to his heart, one that Azula (Elizabeth Yu) delivered via a lightning strike. The gang got away on Appa, and thanks to Katara (Kiawentiio), she was able to heal him enough with her special water from the North. Aang is, at the very least, breathing, but he is not doing so well—which mirrors what happened in the animated series.

Season 3 will most likely follow the same story structure as the animation: the gang hides out in the Fire Nation while Aang heals, then builds an army and a plan to take down the Fire Lord. In the animated series, Zuko also defects from his father and joins Aang and the others to help him learn firebending.

We're not sure how much of that story will be told in season 3. We know that the episode count for season 2 was forced to decrease thanks to Netflix, and I have a feeling season 3 will be about the same. But who knows what will really happen. All we understand is that it's been in the works for a bit.

An executive producer of the series, Christine Boylan, said to Tudum they’ve been planning this arc since before the series was even renewed for seasons 2 and 3, especially with Azula:

“The ending of season 2 and the beginning of season 3 were always in our heads from that first week in the [writers] room…I’m excited about the storyline she [Azula] has in season 2; I’m obsessed with the storyline she has in season 3.”

Azula was one of the characters who didn’t have much background in the original story, despite being well written. We knew she had issues with Zuko and their fights but never really dug that deep into her psychology. So for the live-action, it’s been a nice change of pace to explore her more. But how will that factor into the overall plot they're trying to fit in?

There are also still characters we haven’t met yet that were cast, some of which are featured below:

One specific name that I must point out is Hama, the person from the animated series who created bloodbending. This form of waterbending was banned later on in The Legend of Korra thanks to Katara, but she originally learned it from Hama. Tantoo Cardinal will play her. So that storyline will be included.

They also combined a lot of story elements into season 2 to build up a lot for the war in season 3, but many things felt left behind. I honestly don’t know what they’re going to do or how they’re going to include everything, from Zuko becoming a part of the team to Katara learning bloodbending to so much more.

These are some of the stories that made it a great fantasy show, from the battle at the eclipse to the prison break at Boiling Rock to so much more. Fitting all this into the third season is daunting. It makes me think we should have had a fourth season somehow. Either way, here we are.

But this really is a great time to be a fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender. A new series in the franchise, Seven Havens, is premiering in October for animation fans, so that’s fun. And with the third season confirmed to arrive in 2027, there’s even more to look forward to.
