House of the Dragon season 3 is arriving soon, bringing back a cast of beloved characters as well as some exciting new faces. The new season of the HBO fantasy show will show the Targaryen civil war fully underway, with various battles and deaths expected. Even as we lose some key characters, there will also be some new additions.

Season 3 will feature new characters to join both sides of the fight. There are distinguished lords, fearsome fighters, and those whose loyalties cannot entirely be trusted. Fans might also recognize some of these actors who are joining the series. It will remain to be seen how long they last, but these House of the Dragon additions make season 3 even more exciting.

Lord Ormund Hightower

As the civil war between the Targaryens rages on in House of the Dragon season 3, the Greens will be adding a new pivotal figure to their campaign. Ormund Hightower is the cousin of Alicent and Gwayne Hightower and the nephew of Otto Hightower. He takes over as the head of the Green army, seeing himself as the person who can bring victory to his family and take down Rhaenyra once and for all.

Ormund will be played by James Norton, a relatively established actor joining the cast at this point. Norton is a British actor best-known for his television work in Happy Valley, War & Peace, and House of Guiness. He also appeared in movies like Little Women and Joy, and will be in the upcoming four-part Beatles cinematic event as manager Brian Epstein.

Ser Torrhen Manderly

House Manderly is a powerful house in the North, one that fans of the books will know well. However, a prominent member of House Manderly hasn’t appeared on screen until now. House of the Dragon season 3 will finally bring the fan-favorite allies of the Starks into the story with Torrhen Manderly. He is described as a gluttonous yet fair knight who becomes a strong ally of Rhaenyra Targaryen, leading to the Fall of King’s Landing.

Dan Fogler will take on the role of Torrhen Manderly, joining the likes of Peter Dinklage and Jason Momoa as one of the rare American actors in the Game of Thrones franchise. Fogler already has solid experience with big fantasy franchises, having played Jacob Kowalski in the Fantastic Beasts movies. He also played legendary director Francis Ford Coppola in the limited series The Offer.

Lord Roderick Dustin

The Northern houses will be further represented in House of the Dragon season 3 with the inclusion of Lord Roderick Dustin. Nicknamed Roddy the Ruin, Lord Dustin is an older man who is still feared as a brutal commander on the battlefield. He joins the other Northern houses in fighting for Rhaenyra in the Dance of Dragons, leading an army known as the Winter Wolves in battle against another new character, Ormund Hightower.

Actor Tommy Flanagan will take the role of Roderick Dustin. Flanagan is another well known actor with many memorable appearances in movies like Braveheart, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Gladiator. However, he is best-known for playing Chibs on Sons of Anarchy.

Ser Luthor Largent

While many of the new characters in House of the Dragon season 3 easily fall on the side of either the Blacks or the Greens, it is a little more complicated in the case of Ser Luthor Largent. Ser Luthor is a member of the City Watch who served during the reign of Viserys I Targaryen and was made commander when Aegon II sat on the Iron Throne. However, as we’ve seen, Daemon Targaryen has strong connections to the City Watch, and Ser Luthor’s loyalties may lie with him.

Ser Luthor will be played on House of the Dragon by Tom Cullen. Cullen is a Wesh actor who has appeared in shows like Black Mirror, Downton Abbey, and Knightfall.

Alysanne Blackwood

House Stark has appeared sparingly in House of the Dragon so far, but fans can expect the fan-favorite heroes to have a bigger role in season 3. One hint of this is the inclusion of Alysanne Blackwood, a.k.a. Black Aly. A fearsome fighter, Black Aly is a strong commander during the entire Dance of Dragons.

Mirroring the likes of Arya Stark and Brienne of Tarth, Black Aly refuses to fall in line with how women are “supposed” to behave and proved herself on the battlefield. Her courageous manner also catches the eye of Cregan Stark, and when the war ended, she becomes Lady of Winterfell.

House of the Dragon season 3 premieres on HBO and HBO Max on June 21. Which new character are you most excited to see?
