The Black Gates or Mordor are opening, and out of them marches a barrage of new content to get fans ready for the imminent return of Prime Video's flagship fantasy show, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Earlier this week, the studio dropped two sets of new posters; the first featured the show's villains, while the second highlighted some of the heroes who will stand against them. Now, we've got a fresh trailer to go along with those gorgeous images.
The Rings of Power's third season picks up five years after the devastating end of season 2, where the Elven city of Eregion fell to the shadow and Sauron (Charlie Vickers) claimed his place as the ruler of Mordor. From this new footage, it's clear that he's been very busy bolstering his forces, creating the Ringwraiths, and preparing to forge the One Ring that will rule them all. Watch:
The Rings of Power season 3 looks insanely epic
While The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has never been a show that skimped on its visuals and battles, the trailer for season 3 makes it clear the ante has been upped significantly. Five years after the fall of Eregion, Sauron is more powerful than ever. His dark army vastly outnumbers the elves and dwarves facing him, and he's got far more weapons at his disposal, from his new Ringwraiths to the rings themselves, an alliance with the Balrog beneath Khazad-dûm, and more. What hopes is there for the forces of good to prevail?
If you're familiar with the lore of The Lord of the Rings, you know that we're on the precipice of the War of the Last Alliance, where the Men of Númenor and the Elves fought Sauron back to his stronghold at Barad-dûr, where they finally defeated him. But we'll have a long road before that battle beneath the black tower. I don't expect we'll reach that final clash which serves as the prologue for Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring this season, but we'll certainly see a few more of the large benchmarks along the way. In particular, there's a turning point that takes place roughly in the middle of the conflict which has far-reaching implications for the island nation of Númenor, which I think is pretty likely to happen in season 3. In order to get there, more blood will have to spill, so expect an action-heavy season ahead.
This trailer is loaded with juicy new shots and hints at what's to come, from new looks at characters like Celeborn (Jamie Campbell Bower) and the mysterious orc Marnûkh (Adam Young) to glimpses of armies on the march. It even does away with the last bits of ambiguity about the Stranger's identity, openly referring to him as Gandalf! We're going to get into the details here at the site and break it all down in the coming days, but for now, it's good just to be back in Middle-earth!
Here's the official description for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 3:
In Season Three, Middle-earth is at war. Five years have passed since the fall of Eregion. Sauron’s armies have marched across the whole of the world, conquering all in their path. Only a few isolated pockets stand between the Dark Lord and total victory – Khazad-dûm, where the Dwarves are now sealed deep within their mountain halls, and the elven realms of Lindon and Rivendell, which are protected by their Three Rings. But deep in the land of Mordor, in his newly completed tower of Barad-dûr, the Dark Lord toils day and night, obsessed with harnessing a power that will bring the last of his enemies to their knees: One Ring to rule them all... Now, all the free peoples of Middle-earth – Dwarves, Elves, Men, and Wizards alike – must find a way to come together, in a race against time to prevent Sauron from achieving his goal of utter domination of all life…
