5 mistakes HBO must avoid with an Aegon the Conqueror spinoff

A new report this week has Game of Thrones fans more excited than ever for a potential spinoff about Aegon's Conquest. Here are five things HBO must avoid in order to make it successful.

2. Invest (a lot) in the cinematography

One of the many exciting parts about House of the Dragon is that unlike Game of Thrones, this time in Westeros history features A LOT of dragons. By the time Game of Thrones begins, dragons have gone extinct, that is until Daenerys Targaryen hatches three new ones. But of course, we only see Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion in that show. House of the Dragon takes place when the Targaryens are at their height of power, and there are even more dragons than dragonriders.

Aegon's Conquest takes place over 100 years prior to the Dance of the Dragons, and yes, there were dragons then, too. The VFX on House of the Dragon looks great, and we expect the same quality for an Aegon the Conqueror show. The creatives at HBO clearly know how to use The Volume, so let's not mess that up. These dragons need to look real, lovable, and scary at the same time!

Apart from the dragons, a show about Aegon's Conquest would, of course, involve many battles. This time in history is also called the Wars of Conquest, so we'd expect to see a handful of epic action scenes. Game of Thrones is known for some of the best battle scenes in TV history, and we'd need HBO to deliver the same quality for this as well. We haven't gotten into the war yet on House of the Dragon, but that'll change with season 2.

It's imperative these spinoffs, especially one about Aegon's Conquest, don't skimp out on the choreography, special effects, or anything about the cinematography.

1. Don't cast Henry Cavill... or anyone super famous

I'm sorry, but... no! Do not cast Henry Cavill as Aegon I Targaryen, I'm begging you, HBO! Just because Cavill looked great wearing a silver-white wig to play Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher doesn't mean he has to play a Targaryen. There are other options out there, people! Plus, at 40 years old, he's entirely too old to play Aegon, who is in his 20s at the start of the conquest.

Anytime there's a morsel of news regarding a potential Aegon the Conqueror spinoff, my social media feeds are filled with fans begging HBO to cast Cavill. I really just don't get it. He's a talented actor, sure, but there's no reason to cast him as Aegon beyond the fact that he's already worn a white wig before.

Like Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, this spinoff would be smart to cast a majority of up-and-comers, giving new actors the spotlight who haven't already been typecast. If HBO goes through with a show about Aegon's Conquest, I hope the three leads — Aegon and his sisters Visenya and Rhaenys — are all played by actors I've never seen before.

What are you looking for from a spinoff following Aegon's Conquest? It's a highly-anticipated adaptation, and I just hope it turns out good, if it happens at all.
