8 sci-fi and fantasy shows ending in 2024 (or 2025)

A handful of our favorite sci-fi and fantasy shows are returning in 2024 and 2025, but the bad news is that some of them are also coming to an end.

3. The Umbrella Academy

Multiple Netflix shows are ending in 2024, including The Umbrella Academy. The quirky superhero series follows an unconventional family of adopted siblings, the Hargreeves, who each have unique powers. Each season, the siblings must balance their personal problems with an impending apocalypse that only they can prevent. With an awesome cast, entertaining action, and a killer soundtrack, The Umbrella Academy has become a staple on Netflix, delivering us new surprises and heartfelt moments with every episode.

The Umbrella Academy is based on the comic book of the same name by Gerard Way and premiered on the streamer in 2019. While this is one of my favorite shows currently on TV, I have no trouble admitting the third season represented a bit of a decrease in quality compared to the first two. I was definitely a little disappointed with some of the choices in the narrative and it just didn't feel as impactful as previous seasons. That said, I'm still looking forward to the fourth and final season and agree with the decision to end the show before it overstays its welcome.

Netflix confirmed The Umbrella Academy season 4 will be released in 2024, we just don't know exactly when yet.

4. Star Wars: Andor

Remember when I mentioned the Star Wars universe having gotten stale in the past few years? I wasn't talking about Andor. In fact, Andor is the best thing the franchise has put out in...a very long time. I was honestly hesitant to watch this show when it premiered on Disney+ in 2022 because I was feeling so worn out on the galaxy far, far away. However, Tony Gilroy created something incredibly fresh, compelling, and unafraid to go places previous Star Wars shows hadn't.

Star Wars: Andor stars Diego Luna as titular character Cassian Andor, a directioless man who gets involved in the Rebel Alliance five years before the events of Rogue One and A New Hope. The Clone Wars might be over, but that doesn't mean there's peace in the galaxy. And if you've seen all the Star Wars movies, especially Rogue One, you'll know where the story of Andor is headed.

The first season of Andor received well-deserved critical acclaim and multiple award nominations; it's even nominated for Outstanding Drama Series at the upcoming 75th Emmy Awards. The show will return for a second and final season (this one can't go on forever, obviously) which, unfortunately, might not premiere until 2025.
