8 sci-fi and fantasy shows ending in 2024 (or 2025)

A handful of our favorite sci-fi and fantasy shows are returning in 2024 and 2025, but the bad news is that some of them are also coming to an end.

5. Stranger Things

Another personal favorite of mine on this list is Stranger Things, Netflix's sci-fi phenomenon that premiered in 2016. The series takes place in the '80s, following a group of kids in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. In the first season, we're introduced to a mysterious young girl with supernatural powers named Eleven, who arrives in town and changes absolutely everything. Each season, the central characters must fight to stop threats from the Upside Down, a dangerous alternate dimension full of monsters, as we learn more about Eleven's past.

Stranger Things is without a doubt the best thing Netflix has ever created, and it's incredibly successful. The fourth season was highly anticipated after COVID-19-related delays, and its two-part premiere in the summer of 2022 did not disappoint. Now, fans are waiting on the edge of their seats for the fifth and final season, which has also fallen victim to delays. The series was expected to start filming this year and hopefully premiere in 2024, but because of the strikes, production won't start until January. Because of this, you shouldn't expect the show to return until 2025.

I'm honestly fine waiting for the final season simply because I don't want Stranger Things to end! Based on how the fourth season concluded and all the teases we've gotten from creators Matt and Ross Duffer, I'm expecting the fan-favorite to go out on a bang.

6. Outlander

Another huge show nearing its end is Outlander, the fantasy romance rooted in historical events. The series, which premiered on Starz in 2014, is based on the best-selling books by Diana Gabaldon, and has been very successful for the network.

Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a World War II nurse who, after the war, is mysteriously transported back in time to the year 1743. Throughout the seasons, the show focuses primarily on Claire's epic love story with a man she meets and marries in the 18th century, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). But Claire has a whole life, including a husband, in the 1940s. We watch as Claire travels through time trying to navigate her two very different lives.

The seventh season of Outlander premiered this June before taking a break in August, and is expected to return with its final eight episodes sometime in 2024. After that, it's one more go for Claire and Jamie with the eighth and final season, which will likely come out sometime in 2025.

The Outlander universe is not ending for good, however; there's a spinoff series about Jamie's parents in the works. The prequel show is titled Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
