8 sci-fi and fantasy shows ending in 2024 (or 2025)

A handful of our favorite sci-fi and fantasy shows are returning in 2024 and 2025, but the bad news is that some of them are also coming to an end.

7. Star Trek: Discovery

Similar to the Star Wars universe, the Star Trek franchise continues to expand with spinoff shows. One of those is Star Trek: Discovery, which premiered in 2017 on CBS All Access (now called Paramount+). Discovery takes place about 10 years before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. The show follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they explore uncharted worlds and encounter new peoples and species. Sonequa Martin-Greens stars as Michael Burnham, a human raised as a Vulcan who is eventually promoted to become captain of the ship.

Similar to other Star Trek shows and movies, Discovery leans into themes of exploration and diversity, incorporating elements of action, adventure, and drama. The series has received positive reviews from critics, although the response from general audiences has been mixed.

After five seasons, Star Trek: Discovery will come to a close in the new year. Though we don't have an official release date yet, we know the final season is confirmed to premiere in April 2024.

8. Superman & Lois

Another beloved superhero show on The CW has been canceled. This time we're talking about Superman & Lois. The network hasn't had the best track record in recent years, angering their long-time fans with cancelations as they attempt to usher in a new era of programming. Superman & Lois premiered in 2021 and, as suggested by its title, follows the lives of Clark Kent/Superman and his wife Lois.

After returning to Smallville with their sons, Superman and Lois try to reconnect with the town and provide a normal upbringing for their kids, all while balancing their superhero responsibilities. The show explores the difficulties the couple has navigating their new normal in raising teens with unique abilities. Its focus on family relationships is a welcome fresh take on the typical Superman story. The show has done a great job mixing action with character-driven storylines.

In November of this year, The CW announced that Superman & Lois would be ending after its fourth season, which will also be shorter than usual with only 10 episodes. While fans are disappointed the show is ending, at least we'll be getting one more season to (hopefully) give the show a worthy conclusion. The fourth season is expected to premiere sometime in 2024.
