David Tennant confirms that kissing Michael Sheen in Good Omens was "fine"
By Dan Selcke
The second season of Good Omens, Amazon's whimsical tale about an angel and demon living on Earth, wrapped up last year, in a way many fans thought was tragic. Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and Crowley (David Tennant) kissed, fulfilling a wish many Good Omens stans had been making for years. But it was a parting kiss as the two broke up over a difference of philosophy, with Aziraphale taking an important new job in heaven and Crowley wanting nothing to do with it.
A lot of Good Omens fans are invested in the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley; according to Vulture, the Aziraphale and Crowley pairing claimed both the number one and number 15 spots for AO3's ship stats for 2023, meaning people wrote more pieces of fanfiction about Aziraphale and Crowley being romantically involved than about any other pairing of characters throughout TV, movies and books. (The number 15 win is for stories about Aziraphale and Crowley where they're only platonically involved.) “I’m thrilled so many people are inspired or infuriated by what I’ve made and driven to make their own art. It makes me so happy,” creator Neil Gaiman said at the 2024 HEAVEN Gala.
Gaiman has rolled with fans bringing up the Aziraphale and Crowley romance both online and off. When a fan asked if the two of them would end up together in the third and final season, he had some fun on his Tumblr. "I’m afraid not," Gaiman wrote. "They are barely in it. Crowley dies in the beginning of Season 3 tragically, because of pies, and Aziraphale also dies in Season 3 but hilariously, because of falling in a hole. The rest of Season 3 is a story about three little rabbits who go to the big city to open a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, and their family’s involvement with the East German secret police in the early 1960s." I'd watch that. Meanwhile, he's happy to sign playfully disparaging flyers about himself:
So...will Azirphale and Crowley end up together in Good Omens season 3? We'll have to wait and see. Until then, fans will have that kiss to tide them over. David Tennant gave some insight into that moment when The Guardian asked him whether he or Michael Sheen enjoyed it more. "Presumably Michael was thrilled. How could he not be?" Tennant quipped. "But it was another day at work. The most difficult bit was other people’s awkwardness. We thought it was quite fun, so it was fine. He’d brushed his teeth."
That oughta inspire a few more fanfics. Let's see if the fans can maintain Good Omens' spot on AO3's lists this year while they wait for the story to end.
